The Huntington Guide to Formal Magic Components

A Reference for Practitioners

A name alone does not identify a useful component. An ordinary apple and an apple grown by Pippin Fairies may look much alike, while two pieces of the same wood may carry quite different magic. The practitioner must consider the material, its origin, the way it acquired its power, and the work for which it is intended. Age, handling and preparation can matter as much as appearance.

This guide records 140 components in twenty-four material classes. Their properties have been gathered through observation, failed experiments, successful castings and long-kept records. The resulting theories provide a means of recognizing familiar ingredients and testing unfamiliar ones. They do not yet explain every exception. New discoveries may enlarge a class, change a theory, or reveal a component stronger than any presently known. Formal casting has a history and a body of ritual far beyond the scope of this catalogue.

Strength within a stream

The Tyrran Scale of Power, commonly shortened to TSP, measures an ingredient against others of its own Energy Stream. Each stream has a separate range. A rating of four can therefore represent the strongest known Destruction component, while a Spirit component may reach ten. The upper number marks the current limit of the catalogue for that stream.

Energy Stream Recorded TSP range
Power 1–9
Creation 1–8
Time 1–5
Elemental 1–10
Spirit 1–10
Void 1–5
Destruction 1–4

Energy Stream and material class answer different questions. The stream describes the kind of magic an ingredient contributes; the class identifies what the ingredient is. Feathers belong together as a material class, for example, even though their origins and strengths vary. Knowledge of both allows a caster to eliminate unsuitable ingredients before committing other valuable components to a spell.

Charge availability and independent powers

Positive, neutral and negative describe energy rather than strength. Neutral energy has neither of the other charges and can be influenced. The customary division places Power, Creation, Time, Elemental and Spirit on the positive side, with Void and Destruction on the negative. Individual components require closer attention than that broad division alone can provide.

An unalterable component keeps its nature. An alterable one may acquire greater positive strength or become corrupted into negative energy. The general rule treats negative energy as unalterable. Where an entry supplies a particular limitation, it remains part of the ingredient's description.

Availability has its own terms. Common components are plentiful and comparatively easy to obtain. Rare components are scarce or difficult to acquire. A unique component carries prestige and attracts considerable demand. Special components have an additional use apart from a formal recipe: with the appropriate incantation, they may produce an effect themselves. Such effects are associated with the uncertain body of knowledge called Old Magic.

How an object acquires magic

Scholars have better explanations for the transfer of magic than for the choice of its recipients. Receptive people, creatures and objects can receive, retain and pass on energy; others apparently cannot. The reason for this difference remains unknown. The Royal Academy of Arcane Arts and Sciences accepts a number of explanations for transmission. The Society for Arcane Arts and Sciences uses the term endowment for these processes.

Some endowments arise through deliberate work. Intentional Endowment includes carving, forging, burning and imbuing when these acts are directed by magical will. Ancient wizards are especially accomplished at the discipline required. Celestial Endowment comes from an influence above Tyrra, as with a lightning strike, or from material that arrives from above. Such components are exceptionally scarce.

Other endowments depend upon an ongoing relationship. Natural Endowment develops within a magical creature as it grows. A minotaur's horn is one example; the growth needed is relatively short beside the ages demanded by Time components. Emittance Endowment passes from a magical being into its surroundings or possessions. An object repeatedly worn, handled or used can receive this influence. The same process can affect soil beneath a long-established population and then the plants growing there. Goblin Mushrooms demonstrate this passage through the ground. Emittance can also make an essence tangible, producing such substances as Fairy Dust or Hobgoblin Laughter.

Land, age and death account for the remaining forms. Tyrrastial Endowment arises where the energies of the Ancients have accumulated in Tyrra's earth, trees and waters. Things living in, growing from or made out of these places may share the endowment. Time Endowment develops through the repeated accumulation of small amounts of energy. Survival over great ages, slow growth, and the changes brought by time can all produce suitable components. Necro Endowment is associated with death, killing, poison and undeath. It occurs in lethal plants and venoms, the remains of undead creatures, growths nourished by death such as Four Winds Mushrooms, and objects or essences marked by murderous intent or a malignant curse.

The Influence of Dragons

These different processes ultimately depend upon dragons. In the magical understanding of Tyrra, dragons are the enduring source of positive, neutral and negative energies. Their influence passes through the planes and through time; without it, enchantment cannot take place. Every dragon possesses magic, although the ancient dragons sustain a far greater influence than their younger kin.

Dragons are seldom encountered, and a conversation with one is rarer still. A particular dragon may be a patient source of wisdom or an exceedingly dangerous creature. Youth often brings greater violence and less restraint. Their importance to magic offers no protection to an intruder who imposes upon them.

The material classes

The classes below describe both useful habits of identification and the limits of those habits. Some have firm rules; others gather materials whose behavior varies widely. An unknown exception or property should not be treated as proof that none exists.

Materials of earth and craft

Wood

The maker's work can change what a piece of wood contributes. Wands and pendulums may hold stronger magic than the wood from which they were fashioned, and Time or Intentional Endowment can turn an originally positive material neutral or negative. Wood is otherwise considered positive and is said to resist Necro Endowment entirely.

Creation, Elemental, Power and Time all include wooden ingredients. Its recorded endowments include Natural, Emittance, Tyrrastial, Celestial, Intentional and Time. The source and the treatment of a particular piece therefore deserve examination before its appearance is trusted.

Stones Crystals and Sands

Many stones provide a modest ingredient at little difficulty to a collector who knows the right ground. The Barbarian Rune Stone is much stronger than this pattern suggests, as is obsidian. A stone remaining within its natural Elemental stream may become especially potent through the influence of Tyrra or deliberate endowment.

This broad class crosses Power, Time, Elemental and Spirit; its classification also includes Void. Positive and neutral charges are recorded. Crystals are traditionally described as neutral and receptive to surrounding energy. Once a stone has been endowed, it is normally fixed. A stone carrying Tyrrastial or Time Endowment alone can be an exception, but this allowance does not extend to an ingredient already bearing another endowment in combination. Emittance, Celestial and Intentional Endowments also occur in the class.

Tempered Earth

Soils form one of the clearest classes. They are recorded as neutral Elemental ingredients with Tyrrastial Endowment and cannot be corrupted. This resistance is understood as Tyrra's own refusal of negative influence. Among known soils, the white earth of HammerFall provides the greatest strength. No exception to the class rules has been established.

Metals

Keys are particularly valuable examples of a metal's ability to receive and retain magic. Iron, brass, silver and gold all serve this purpose, and high Power grades occur among their crafted forms. Silver keys have the additional reputation of opening voids. Iron alone is credited with giving a weapon or shield resistance to Shatter when the ingredient is spent upon it.

Metal components range from one to nine in strength. Most begin as positive Power ingredients, but shaping or imbuing can increase their potency. Sustained exposure to negative energy, often involving much blood, can corrupt metal over time. Iron can also decay into rust and become a Time component. The recorded streams are Power, Creation and Time, with positive, neutral and negative charges. Intentional working is the customary source of metal components, Meteoric Iron being the stated exception; Emittance, Celestial and Time Endowments also appear in their classification.

Enchanted Glass

A useful glass object can remain in storage until its magic is required, and a spent piece may still be worth selling or bartering as a keepsake. The material is described as retaining its original clarity and resisting negative taint. Sarobar Spheres are the named exception to the usual association with Spirit.

Descriptions of this class place glass in Spirit, Time and Elemental work. Its class record instead lists Power, Spirit and Destruction, allows positive and negative energy, and names Tyrrastial and Intentional Endowments. The individual glass entries remain necessary guides to their particular uses.

Harvested growth and small creatures

Petals Leaves and Herbs

Practitioners often keep gardens for these ingredients. Hanging a harvest above a fireplace to dry can provide supplies throughout the year. Most members of the class are positive Elemental components; poisonous growths instead serve Void magic. Their character cannot be changed by alteration or imbuing. Tyrrastial and Necro Endowments account for the positive and negative examples recorded here.

Fruits and Seeds

Some seeds can remain dormant beyond the usual year's storage and eventually enter another Energy Stream. The acorn is the familiar example: an Elemental ingredient at the beginning of its life can become a Time ingredient after sufficient uninterrupted age. Elven annual harvests make it possible to maintain supplies at both stages.

Fruits and seeds are positive and occur in Power, Time and Elemental. Emittance, Tyrrastial and Time Endowments are recorded. Most are unalterable, with Tyrrastially endowed examples providing the stated exception.

Mushrooms and Spores

Dwarven practitioners have relied upon mushrooms for a very long time. The class reaches every one of the seven streams and contributes both positive and negative energy, giving it an important place in the balance of magic. Grinding, boiling or leaving a specimen raw does not change its magical nature; neither alteration nor imbuing will turn it into another kind of ingredient.

The recorded endowments are Emittance, Time, Tyrrastial and Necro. Accounts of the negative exceptions name Four Winds Mushroom together with Black Mushroom in one description and Hallow's Eve Mushroom in another. Hallow's Eve also has a separate reputation for enabling contact with the dead when properly used.

Moss

Only a few of Tyrra's many mosses are useful components, and a dry specimen is generally preferred. The class occurs in Elemental and Void, with positive, neutral and negative examples. Tyrrastial and Necro Endowments are recorded. A Void moss need not be poisonous merely because it belongs to that stream: poisonous and nonpoisonous forms are both recognized.

Insects and Their Produce

The way an insect affects its handler is a useful distinction within this class. Harmless examples tend to provide positive Creation ingredients with Tyrrastial Endowment. Poisonous ones tend toward negative Void ingredients with Necro Endowment. Some should be used soon after capture, while others demand careful handling regardless of freshness.

Feathers

Ordinary feathers have been collected from forest floors since the earliest practice of magic. Hummingbird, cardinal and Black Swan feathers are named among the common group, with cardinal and swan supplying its stronger examples. Feathers from magical creatures are often remarkable in size, color or both. Collectors commonly add ribbons as a gesture of respect to the source creature.

Creation is the stream assigned to every feather, and positive energy and an unalterable nature are taught as class rules. Natural Endowment is also taught as an absolute, although the customary division distinguishes Tyrrastially endowed common feathers from Naturally endowed magical ones. Most come from birds. The Horse Feather and Red Quill are the two named exceptions to that origin.

Remains of living beings

Blood

The change from a living person to an undead creature can change the character of its blood. Life ordinarily supplies a positive ingredient; Vampire Blood and Black Unicorn Blood are the named negative exceptions. Undead blood is especially associated with destructive and necromantic work.

Blood is considered unalterable. The class discussion places it in Power, Void and Destruction, while the class list gives Power, Destruction and Necro. Natural and Necro Endowments are recorded. Necro remains an endowment elsewhere in this guide rather than an additional numbered Energy Stream.

Pelts and Skins

A pelt's power depends upon the being that grew it, but skin generally resists receiving that being's negative influence. Positive and neutral examples are recorded in Power and Time. Natural and Time Endowments occur, and pelts are considered fixed in nature.

Teeth Tusks and Horns

A creature's use of these parts helps determine the resulting component. An aged tusk or minotaur horn can signify a warrior's maturity and provide Power, while teeth used to bite and tear belong more readily to destructive work. Such remains are difficult trophies to obtain. Wearing a troll tusk or a minotaur horn is believed to lend courage in battle.

Power, Void and Destruction are represented. The class rules describe these components as Naturally endowed and unalterable; the classification also records Necro Endowment and neutral or negative energy.

Claws and Talons

Claws from an enchanted creature generally exceed those of an ordinary beast in strength. Their former use is said to pass positive or negative influence into them. The class record gives neutral and negative charges, Power and Destruction streams, and Natural Endowment. They are unalterable. Those who display them openly may seek courage or wish others to recognize courage already shown.

Bones

Only the bones of magical creatures and beings qualify for this class. They keep well and can be used whole, ground or boiled down, but their dangerous origins make them costly. Pirates may possess Sea Troll Knuckles; rangers may offer Death Knight Bones. Neither source is likely to provide them cheaply.

Bones ordinarily supply Power unless they carry negative energy. The class record lists Power and Void, neutral and negative charges, and Natural or Necro Endowment. Their energy cannot be altered.

Collected and prepared ingredients

Sacred Waters

Age can make a water component considerably stronger. The ice of an ancient glacier or a frost giant's cave illustrates the upper end of this process. Sacred waters are described as pleasant and intoxicating to drink. Their class rules identify them as positive Spirit components, endowed only by Tyrra and incapable of corruption or alteration.

Pearls and Shells

The edible animal can be a welcome addition to a collector's discovery, but only a few shellfish provide useful magic. Their shells offer mild Spirit ingredients. The class account places magical pearls near the middle of the Time range, while its classification assigns the class to Spirit, positive energy and Tyrrastial Endowment. It also describes the class as alterable.

Essence

An essence is easier to keep when it has a physical anchor. Fairy Dust attached to an ash spool becomes the Fairy Throne; an essence held only in air can be lost as soon as its container opens. Bottled Moon Beams are lighter than air and should remain corked until the moment of use.

The source being strongly influences an essence. Fairy Dust and Hobgoblin Laughter are scarce, powerful examples from magical creatures. The class discussion names Power, Spirit and Void; its classification gives Power, Spirit and Creation, positive energy, and an unalterable nature. Emittance, Celestial and Intentional Endowments are recorded.

Oils and Incense

Fragrance can support a sustained meditative state, and some oils or incenses are used to keep negative influences away. These Creation materials are found throughout Tyrra, but they do not keep indefinitely. Even a tightly corked vial stored in darkness preserves them for no more than a year.

The class rules describe them as positive and Tyrrastially endowed. Time also appears in the class record, both as a stream and as an endowment. Tyrran Blood is the named exception to the usual Creation association.

Inks

Two inks are singled out for scroll work. Word Write Ink is associated here with Earth Formal Magic Scrolls and described as Creation; Kraken Ink is used for Celestial Formal Magic Scrolls. The class record lists Spirit, Elemental and Void, with positive or negative energy and Tyrrastial, Natural or Necro Endowment. The catalogue gives each named ink's own classification.

Relics

Relics can come from many peoples and take almost any form. The useful examples are usually no more than four inches high. One explanation holds that centuries of accumulated energy can saturate a small object sufficiently to make it a component, although age and size do not explain every case.

The class has no stated exception to its principal rules: a relic is a neutral Time component with Time Endowment and an unalterable nature.

Ashes

Ash can be prepared before a ritual or made as part of it, provided any stored supply stays dry. Magical scrolls yield stronger ash than special matches. Allowing a match to burn completely gives the greatest available quantity.

The class account identifies WhiteMane Birch as the wood for both scroll paper and matchsticks, with special inks added to the scrolls. Ancient wizards and their apprentices make these objects by hand and commonly barter them in nearby town squares. Ashes are classified as negative Destruction ingredients with Intentional Endowment.

Candles

Lighting activates a Wizard Candle. Although it usually stands no more than six inches high, it can burn for hours and gives off a pleasant scent. Talented apprentices prepare these positive Creation ingredients under an ancient wizard's instruction. Houppelande beeswax, an outer covering of special herbs and sometimes a little Fairy Dust contribute to the finished candle. Its endowment is Intentional.

Power

What supplies Power

Every formal spell requires a Power component. This stream draws upon powerful substances and the influence of enchanted beings. Stones, woods and metals form much of it; iron also links the stream to blood and bone. Eleven classes are named in the general account: Stones, Crystals and Sands; Wood; Blood; Mushrooms; Metals; Fruits and Seeds; Pelts and Skins; Claws and Talons; Essence; Teeth, Tusks and Horns; and Bones.

Emittance, Natural and Intentional Endowments are the processes named in the Power theories. Positive or neutral energy is expected, and the ingredient is considered unalterable. The Athame is the explicit exception to both expectations, remaining responsive to its user's will and taking its charge from the intended spell. Iron, silver and brass receive particular attention among suitable metals and substances containing them.

Settlements creatures and their influence

Elven settlements can change the land around them. The influence requires a long residence and a continuing presence, but it does not require an elf to direct magic into the soil. Nor does it drain the inhabitants. Elves are strengthened by this relationship, and the woods and ground they inhabit are regarded as helping to protect them. Dwarven communities have a similarly striking association with certain mushrooms. These appear around the entrances to mountain kingdoms of ancient lineage without deliberate cultivation, and do not appear elsewhere in the same fashion.

Sarrs also share a strong relationship with Tyrra. These catlike people inhabit Myrr, where the tribes possess their own territories and differ considerably in appearance. They are notably fond of peppermint. Stones receive their emittance particularly well.

Fairies are mischievous relatives of the Elves. They can enchant fruit and produce essences that take physical form, including Fairy Dust. Different fairy peoples affect different harvests. Pippin Fairies tend extensive orchards of small, sweet green apples grown in enchanted soil. Water Fairies inhabit lakes and large ponds and live chiefly upon fish. They are not gardeners, but their presence endows the red juniper berries that grow nearby. These inedible berries provide a fourth-grade Power ingredient.

Like their fairy relatives, pixies enjoy mischief. They favor very old oak forests, whose trees withstand storms and endure for long ages. Their woods can leave visitors intoxicated and confused. A pixie's amusement may depend upon misleading an already lost traveler, and the mushrooms in such a forest deserve particular suspicion.

Tree Ents can remain in one place for ages. They keep watch within thick forests, rarely address a traveler and speak among themselves without audible words. When they choose to move, their form is that of a great walking tree, but few witnesses see this. Branches used for Tree Ent Dust are those that have broken away; collectors do not sever a living limb.

Dragons possess the accumulated strength of exceptionally long lives. Their bodies can supply positive and negative components of great potency. A dragon may offer an enduring friendship and wise counsel, but it is an enemy few practitioners should willingly make. Ancient wizards sometimes keep company with them, carrying news from distant places. These reclusive casters preserve lost spells, magical traditions and secrets. Their knowledge could reward many students, yet apprenticeship remains unusual.

Royal lineage can also receive and transmit Power. In an ancient ruling family, a king's inherited relationship with a long-held home permits Emittance Endowment. The ability remains dormant until the king wears the crown. Human blood, by contrast, bears Natural Endowment as a living force. One form is seldom used, while the rarer kind requires a harvest that puts a life at risk.

Warriors and dangerous neighbors

A minotaur combines the forms of man and bull and takes pride in combat. Its axe is handled with considerable speed and determination. Victory in an honorable contest may win its nose ring, after which the defeated owner can fashion another. Trolls provide a different sort of opponent. They inhabit mountain caves and dark places under bridges, wield immense clubs, and have fought Dwarves over possession of mountains.

Sea Trolls are less well understood. Sailors place them near maelstroms, but whether they cause these waters remains uncertain. Accounts describe a fishtail beneath a body with four arms, each hand ending in two clawed fingers. A crested head, pale gray skin, fiery red eyes, a scarcely visible nose and a projecting mouth of sharp teeth complete the descriptions.

Goblins rarely raid alone. A band of fifty or sixty is common, and an established nest can reach thousands. They occupy swamp caves beneath hanging foliage and can overrun mountain tunnels, becoming a persistent danger to Dwarven holds. Their smaller relationship to Ogres does not make them harmless: they forge weapons and take townspeople for food. Descriptions emphasize a bony face, humanlike eyes and a broad mouth crowded with teeth. A captured thief will often grovel or invent a story, but a rooted nest is difficult to remove.

Hobgoblins generally leave others alone until disturbed. They are intelligent magical tricksters, less immediately fearsome than Goblins but capable of prolonged torment. A victim may be made to laugh without control for an hour or repeatedly fall asleep. An enchanted bottle offers a possible response. If uncorked while the hobgoblin laughs, it can catch Hobgoblin Laughter; discovery brings the creature's amusement to an end and sends it away.

Kobolds are red-skinned goblinoids with large ears shaped like bat wings. Their groups are smaller than Goblin nests, which is attributed to seasonal breeding. Mating in autumn produces litters of up to three in midwinter; the young are grown by spring. Night raids take livestock, small tools, provisions and children. A load that one or two raiders cannot carry is usually abandoned, and bags below seventy pounds are particularly vulnerable. Villagers therefore secure barns and children's windows and bring portable farm equipment indoors when spring hunting parties appear. Lambs, kids and chicks are all at risk. Much kobold speech is a mumble, although a few can imitate words cleverly enough to appear more intelligent. They are regarded as only a little cleverer than Goblins.

A werewolf begins as someone who survives another werewolf's bite. Even a brief sight of the full moon brings the change into a creature sharing human and wolf traits. Its nose can follow prey or another werewolf across miles. Newly afflicted people may remember nothing of a hunt; those who have lived with the curse for a long time may become attached to its power and refuse rescue.

The unidentified source of the Skull Chalice

The animal whose bones became the Skull Chalice has never been identified, and some scholars doubt that it ever will be. One theory places its death during the unnatural cold and snows of year 384, when monsters and lesser elementals emerged in great numbers. A solitary creature may have fallen to those hordes without leaving another record. The resulting bones demonstrate that the creature possessed substantial enchantment; its appearance and identity remain unknown.

A Tiger Gorbe can take an expended Nimeshab home to Darqai and bury it for renewed enchantment. Entrusting that return to them expresses respect. The Sarrs' long habitation of the land gives its stones their dependable use in Formal Magic, and buying directly from a Sarr provides assurance of authenticity.

Also called Tiger-Eye, Nimeshab appears in gold, brown, blue and sometimes green, crossed by black strands. Polishing brings out a pearly luster. Each stone is distinctive. The Tiger Gorbe themselves have individually distinctive stripes and particularly favor these stones, which they carry for protection. They believe ancestral spirits dwell within them.

For a casting that requires cedar, the wood's origin matters. Only cedar from Bel Tradisin is suitable; another source will leave the spell unsuccessful and the other ingredients wasted. The Cascara Empire includes the kingdom Lumaria, within which Bel Tradisin holds the status of a principality.

Its cedars grow in Amanest, an Elven forest of abundant foliage, waterfalls and rich black soil. The Elves impart their Emittance Endowment to the trees. No age has been established for the forest. It appears on the region's earliest maps, but remained little explored before the Elves settled and prospered there. Historical records identify them as Amanest's first inhabitants.

Human Blood

A dose of Human Blood must come entirely from one person. Combining several donors' contributions taints it, unlike many other kinds of blood, and does not provide a usable dose. A practitioner can supply their own, but may not survive long enough to perform the intended casting.

Ancient practitioners used this component widely. A few formulas still demand it exclusively; where substitution is possible, modern wizards generally choose stone or wood instead. The quantity is important. Some spells need one dose, others several, and a large requirement may leave a donor dizzy, cause a death followed by resurrection, or consume every drop with fatal results. Saving the donor with a Life spell causes the gathered blood either to evaporate or to lose its magical qualities.

Large supplies sometimes pass through unscrupulous black-market merchants. Their availability does not remove the dangers attached to obtaining and using the component.

Dwarves are a useful first source for SnowCap Mushrooms. They harvest them in the mountains, and Dwarven practitioners were the first to use them in a magical tradition that now extends back centuries. Many Dwarves also enjoy mushrooms as food, although the SnowCap has a separate place among mild Power ingredients.

Its name comes from BrimRose's SnowCap Mountains. To an inexperienced gatherer it resembles an ordinary mushroom beneath brush, but its usual habitat includes some of Tyrra's highest and steepest peaks. Reaching it can be dangerous. Its potency is believed to come from the Dwarven soil in which it grows.

The shape of an Athame concentrates the power already present in raw iron. Wizards forge this knife with magical purpose, commonly assigning the work to apprentices. A pointed blade directs the metal's energy, although the knives themselves vary in size and design.

Iron demands care. Rust spoils the blade's appearance without immediately removing its enchantment, and a wound from a rusted Athame can expose the injured person to the negative energy the rust gives off. In time, rusting iron becomes a Time component. Handling and storage therefore matter even while the knife continues to hold its earlier magic.

Eight adornments distinguish Kingsilver regardless of the individual king's design. Gems often serve this purpose, and the number signifies infinity. It is sometimes taken as an expression of hope for a lengthy and prosperous reign.

The metal is pure silver drawn from a royal mine once each year specifically for tokens of the king's appreciation. Each king chooses the form and may use personal ornamentation to distinguish the gifts. Small daggers with a fleur-de-lis on the handle are a common choice.

The pieces require royal approval before blessing. Choosing who will receive them is then a lengthy undertaking: recipients have usually distinguished themselves through remarkable acts or sustained loyalty in the kingdom's service. These gifts carry considerable standing as honors, apart from any magical application.

An Iron Arrowhead worn as an amulet offers a defensive use quite apart from its place in a formula. Tormented haunting spirits, particularly the Banshees associated with ponds, lakes and rivers, commonly withdraw when they see it. The more powerful may risk approaching anyway.

Its protective boundary is estimated at three feet around the wearer. A Banshee that moves inside that boundary is set ablaze. The movement must come from the Banshee: advancing upon one while wearing the arrowhead does not turn it into an offensive weapon. That discharge exhausts the arrowhead's energies and leaves it unsuitable as a magical ingredient, although it can be enchanted again.

Steel and bone serve for many ordinary arrowheads. Iron provides this additional protection, making it especially worth retaining as an amulet for someone living near water rather than immediately spending it in a casting.

Three fingers' worth of Pixie Oak Wood is sufficient for its use as a component. Suitable wood comes from ancient forests where Pixie realms have endured for generations. Oak is exceptionally strong and is also a favorite of the Pixies.

Travelers do not always recognize those realms. Pixies borrow their cousins' practice of arranging Fairy Circles beneath oaks, often in the form of a conspicuous ring of mushrooms. Curiosity draws people toward the circles, while the shade offers weary travelers a tempting place to rest.

The tales tell of captives reduced to Pixie size and put to washing dishes in the kitchens of the Pixie King's Great Halls. Feast days are reputed to be especially hazardous, when the kitchens need more hands. These remain stories about Pixie traps rather than a certainty about every traveler who rests beneath an oak.

Odor is the practical test of a stored Kobold Skin. An odorless piece is the best purchase, and a sound skin generally keeps for about a year. As it ages, the smell grows stronger. Once it is too offensive to keep indoors, the skin is rotting and its magical strength has gone.

The surface is smooth like cattle leather, but considerably less durable. Its source is a goblin-like raider with red skin, small protruding horns, batlike ears and a short nose. Kobolds may reach six feet in height and tend to act more by instinct than intelligence. They raid in groups, with children among their favored prey, and carry captives back to their nests.

Harvesters must contend with the native Juniper Hopper. This bird nests nearby, favors the berries as food and uses them in attracting a mate. A single bird might present little difficulty, but Hoppers gather in territorial flocks. A berry gatherer is treated as an enemy by the whole group and quickly driven away.

Only a small quantity of this yellow blood is needed for considerable potency. It is taken directly from a heart that is still beating, and the donor dies in most cases. The component is not considered illegal, but its manner of acquisition makes possession highly suspicious.

Consent is the center of the argument. A truly fearful person seems unlikely to volunteer for such pain and danger. Against this stands the high price commanded by a rare ingredient, which might persuade even a coward to submit. The amount demanded is also regarded as a measure of potency: a higher price is believed to indicate stronger blood, while easy agreement for little payment casts doubt upon the donor's cowardice.

The blood is available only through the black market. Its suppliers do not provide an open account of either the donor or the collection.

Collection depends upon trust. Elven families with relationships extending across generations gather the rare fallen limbs from the forest floor. The deliberately striking appearance of Pixie Shrooms serves a purpose. A dimpled cap of deep pink or purple contrasts with the stem, attracting attention and tempting the curious. They are said to be grown as lures for intruders in Pixie woods.

Eating them within a Pixie Oak Wood can cause hallucinations. Those affected describe misty journeys through Fairy realms or visits from Pixies entertained by their bewilderment. Whether every such experience is illusion remains uncertain. Eating the mushrooms beyond the Pixies' attention is instead reputed to bring playfulness, happiness and an attractive charm that draws friends. These latter effects belong to legend.

Their recognizable appearance and usefulness as Power components do not depend upon accepting those stories.

Werewolf hunters sometimes seek that very effect. They wear the fur to display their success and, during the full moon, to draw Werewolves toward them. Those with no wish to attract a hunt are advised to bury their pelts during that time.

Rotaria's Barren Coast lies where the Bone Mountains descend to the sea. Sparse trees, stony ground unfit for farming and a few fishing villages describe the coast found in books. Even pirates are said to avoid settling there. Another explanation survives in the stories of a curse.

That legend places buried treasure chests along the rocky shore. Each chest and its matching key were enchanted so that neither physical effort nor other magic could open it. Its own key must be used with an incantation that has since been lost. The keys were scattered far from their chests.

Creation

Magic received through the senses

A Creation ingredient must make a powerful impression upon at least one of the five senses. Strong fragrance, striking color, the light of a candle and the movement of enchanted insects all offer different ways of doing so. The resulting beauty can also help a practitioner become calm and attentive during a ritual.

The general theories describe Creation as positive, with Natural and Tyrrastial Endowments. Six classes are named: Oils and Incense, Insects and Their Produce, Feathers, Essence, Mushrooms and Wood. Ancient wizards also demonstrate Intentional working within this stream. They preserve Old Magic and can imbue objects, though their customary companions are more often dragons and phoenixes than other people.

Feathered beings and the smaller harvests

A phoenix renews its life by burning and rising again from the ashes. Its brilliant orange plumage is rarely seen in the wild. An ancient wizard may prepare a golden perch in hope of such a companion, but the bird decides whether to accept the wizard. Useful feathers are shed as a newly reborn phoenix grows into an adult, an event that does not provide a frequent harvest.

Griffins combine a lion's body with an eagle's head and wings. Their association with the sovereign beast and bird gives them a reputation for unusual majesty. They are considered benevolent, yet possess enough strength to overcome a bear. The white Winged Horse is even more often dismissed as legend. A sighting is considered fortunate, and its magical feathers are found upon mountain cliffs.

Harpies can be mistaken for women in cloaks, especially in dim light beneath a waning moon. During mating season, a green-cloaked figure whistling along a dark road may be a harpy seeking to lead a drunken man away. Their birdlike form is less apparent from a distance than a traveler might expect.

A young Snowy Owl remains with its parents through the year or more needed to reach adulthood. The parents form a lifelong pair in Icewood Forest, northwest of Volta. The nest defines the limit of the thick white feathers' magical power. Cardinals are smaller birds, about six inches high, with fine blood-red plumage. Only the birds of Loretold Mountain in Therendry supply magical cardinal feathers; collectors search the forest floor and abandoned nests there.

Ravenholt farmers sometimes lose a harvest to the sudden arrival of dozens of Giant Ravens, only to see no birds at all the following day. The flocks gather rapidly and leave just as quickly. They do not migrate, however, and remain through winter. These uncommon birds are revered locally: farmers set aside extra corn and sunflower acreage for them, while feathers are decorated with ribbons in their honor. Peacocks are also rare. A high carriage of the head and a three-foot, iridescent tail with conspicuous eye markings distinguish them. Most feathers reach practitioners through specialist procurers.

Houppelande Bees are described as fuzzy, thumb-sized insects marked in yellow and black. Hoblings of Houppelande commonly keep them for their exceptionally sweet honey. Honey production continues from spring through autumn. Winter brings their period of hibernation.

Flutter-bys belong to the place called the Forest and occur nowhere else. Their tubular bodies, long antennae and broad round wings distinguish them from butterflies; both size and color vary. Glow Bugs have their own restricted home, the Forest of Creation. They resemble larger lightning bugs, illuminating the woods at night and bringing a Tyrrastially endowed display to formal rituals. Pink Moths are scarce, plump and fuzzy, measuring about half a thumb in length. Special handlers who raise and tend them provide most available specimens.

Rose Quartz is worn, in either its rough or polished form, for its reputed ability to ease heartbreak. Its milky rose color also conceals the faint impressions it holds of previous handlers. An attuned practitioner may experience another person's thoughts, but these remain fragmentary and difficult to distinguish.

Like Smokey Quartz, it lacks the purity required for clear sight. Handling can leave the impression that the stone is recording the holder's thoughts. Its magic depends upon an intact crystal; a break destroys that property.

Weight matters more than a merchant's shaping of this ingredient. A usable piece must weigh more than one ounce, whatever decorative form has been made for sale. It needs no particular storage treatment and remains an attractive curiosity after its magic is spent.

These secluded snakes live near BrimRose, although villagers seldom see them. They are thought to be small relatives of the Basilisk, sharing its general form. Most of their lives are spent in hibernation, interrupted to seek a mate. No lifespan has been reliably recorded; accounts credit them with centuries, whereas captivity kills them within a few days.

Learning communication through a clear sphere can occupy most of a skilled apprentice's life, with time set aside each day for practice. Ancient wizards devote decades to mastering it, gaining insight and, when properly attuned, a means of communicating with other wizards through their crystals. It is quartz in its purest state.

A sphere retains the thoughts of its handlers and impressions of what it has witnessed. Those memories remain even after the crystal has been used as a formal component, locked within it throughout its long existence. A holder may feel that current thoughts are being preserved as well. Breaking the stone destroys its magic. The respectful response is to return the damaged crystal to Tyrra for healing.

Wood Elves of southern Eringol maintain stores far older than the people who will eventually sell them. They began harvesting the local acorns when their Elemental properties were recognized after settlement. A century later, the oldest supplies revealed a second use, and annual collection continued.

The useful stages are sharply separated. During its first month, an acorn supplies an Elemental ingredient of strength one. After that month it has no magical use until it has passed one hundred years, when it becomes a Time ingredient of exceptional strength. A golden underside and a cap that has darkened to deep brown identify the aged form.

Elemental

The Influence of Tyrra

Elemental ingredients receive their magic from Tyrra: they may be soil, material within the soil, or growth nourished by it. Positive, neutral and negative charges are possible. The general rules assign Tyrrastial Endowment to every Elemental and permit alteration only in wooden components.

Seven material groups are named: Wood; Fruits and Seeds; Herbs, Petals and Leaves; Stones, Crystals and Sands; Inks; Mushrooms; and Soils. The catalogue records the particular histories and endowments of each ingredient alongside these broad rules.

Collection traditionally begins with a knock upon the tree and a request for permission. Three fingers' worth of wood is enough for a formal spell. Oak is exceptionally strong, surpassed by Ash, and an old grove can possess magic even when no pixies inhabit it.

Oak's association with dependable strength gives it a protective reputation. Pixies and forest spirits are said to spare travelers who carry it because they revere the tree. Wood stolen from the very forest being crossed has the opposite effect: its possession is an offense for which the inhabitants take particular pleasure in revenge. Ancient oaks are favored homes for pixies and their mischief.

Spirit

Water and what it carries

Spirit includes water, frozen water, life sustained by snow and materials that come from water. Pearls, Kraken Ink and shore sand belong to this understanding; glass and mirrors made from such sand can share it. Celestial essences, whether visible or unseen, extend the stream beyond tangible waters.

The general theories describe Spirit as positive and unalterable, with Tyrrastial or Celestial Endowment. Six classes are named: Water; Pearls and Shells; Inks; Essence; Stones, Crystals and Sands; and Enchanted Glass.

Makers and inhabitants

Gnomish hospitality often centers upon Summer Cheery, a remarkably sweet and potent liquor. Cupboards are well supplied with the little river-stone glass mugs made to hold it, most no higher than three inches. Offering another drink in such a mug is considered unlucky.

Frost Giants are among Tyrra's most ancient inhabitants. They live in small tribal groups within ice caverns of comparable age; some believe the giants originally hollowed them out. They are unaccustomed to strangers. Conflict between tribes can send blizzards and deep snow into the valleys beneath their homes.

Not every kraken is a ship-destroying monster. Some are docile creatures no longer than eighteen inches. The ink required for magic comes from the Mighty Kraken, which lives in the ocean depths and sometimes attacks merchant shipping. Once wrapped around a vessel, it cannot be dislodged. Survivors who kill one seldom neglect the rare and costly ink, though the battle offers little prospect of an easy harvest.

Both the shell and its pearl take their names from Perfect in Blackstone. Scholars seek the shell for its reputed assistance in retaining knowledge before a mentor's examination. Void

Death and the absence of life

Void draws upon things that kill and things whose former life has ended. The general theories assign negative energy, Necro Endowment and an unalterable nature to the entire stream. Their short list names only Poisons, Moss, Bones and Blood, although individual ingredients in the catalogue occupy additional classes.

Poison is a frequent property, but the stream includes more than toxic substances. Some components reach ordinary markets only rarely. Hemlock Extract, and possibly the Assassin's Dagger, are more likely to be offered through concealed trade.

The creatures behind the components

Necromancers turn fallen warriors into Death Knights, binding them as obedient soldiers. Dark magic increases their strength while a berserk, euphoric state drives attacks upon anyone close enough. One can readily fight half a dozen men.

Reports of undead belong with the town magistrate without delay, since the sighting may reveal a necromancer working nearby. Necromancers summon these creatures and turn them loose against settlements. A solitary zombie approaching someone occupied with daily work can present as much danger as a visible horde. The disruption has led to spells designed specifically for their dissipation.

Waspari hunt as a hive. These enormous, carnivorous bees bear yellow and black stripes and red claws. They often forage after rain, paralyzing prey and carrying it back to be cocooned for later consumption. The sound of an approaching swarm is usually audible well before the attackers arrive.

The Basilisk is a stealthy and patient ambush predator, capable of swallowing a person whole. An oversized boar is favored prey, and even a slight fang wound can paralyze it. Reports credit its gaze with killing power. Merely seeing the creature is not said to be fatal; attracting its notice is the greater danger.

Vampires differ from mindless undead. Many have spent centuries acquiring education, wealth and the refinement needed to pass unnoticed in society. Their powers include command of winds, unnatural strength and the ability to enthrall through a glance. They usually act at night, although some tolerate daylight while remaining in shade. Draining a human takes less than three minutes. Survival of a lesser bite may instead lead the victim into vampirism.

An exploitative offer can end any prospect of later business.

A small pouch of charcoal-colored fragments is enough. Fingertips, toes, broken ribs and pieces of larger bones are usual. Their distinctive appearance makes a convincing counterfeit difficult. Their origin in the necromancer's enslaved warriors accounts for both scarcity and danger of acquisition.

Finger of the Undead

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Three
Energy Stream void
Class bones
Energy Negative
Endowments Necro Endowment

Do not break the finger until its power can be contained. A break releases the energy whether or not a spell is underway, and other strong ingredients are needed to keep that energy under control. A finger retaining two knuckles is preferred for effective use.

The component is pale and stiff, usually consisting of old, dry bone beneath a powdery, leathery covering. It is consequently fragile. Traveling warriors who have fought the undead supply most examples, and the fingers remain prized for their contribution to magic.

The Black Spot

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Three
Energy Stream Void
Class Ink
Energy Positive: Negative
Endowments Necro Endowment

In the Bay of Pecare, a dispute among pirates or fugitives can end with a cursed mark rather than an open fight. The busy port draws both those seeking fortune and those avoiding discovery. Pirates reserve the Black Spot especially for traitors, dishonorable thieves and cowards. A final handshake can transfer it to the intended victim.

The thin ink begins as an exotic poisonous flower from the bay, dried, reduced to powder and mixed with water. Its unusual property is activation after prolonged exposure to air. Applied straight from a sealed jar to a palm, it leaves an unexposed layer against the hand while the surface becomes poisonous. Gloves conceal the preparation and prevent its spread. After the transfer, seawater is used to remove the remaining ink promptly.

The victim retains a black mark upon the hand. According to the curse's reputation, whispering shadows follow the marked person until the offense has been confessed and the wrong repaired.

Mummy Essence

Endowments Emittance Endowment

An apprentice may be sent to collect this ingredient from a mausoleum unopened for centuries. The collection method belongs to the wizards' private knowledge. A town with a nearby wizard can therefore offer a reasonably accessible supply without revealing how it was obtained.

The explanation offered for the essence concerns the departure of a soul. Death is thought capable of leaving a Void; within a sealed crypt, that energy remains and accumulates into Mummy Essence.

Waspari Venom

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Four
Energy Stream void
Class Insects and their Produce
Energy Negative
Endowments Necro Endowment

The loud buzz offers a prospective victim an opportunity to flee before these agile fliers strike. A group may contain a dozen or more, and a solitary hunter is unusual. Waspari keep remote hives but may cover hundreds of miles in a day, scavenging or taking prey whenever an opportunity appears.

Each is roughly the size of a person, with yellow and black markings. Its venom is poisonous, extremely painful and potentially fatal. That venom provides the Void ingredient.

Hemlock Extract

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Four
Energy Stream void
Class Petals, Leaves and Herbs
Energy Negative
Endowments Necro Endowment

Swallowing the thick black extract is fatal; its poisonous action is described as requiring ingestion. It has consequently been used in both assassination attempts and suicide since its discovery. In formal work it is among the stronger poisonous ingredients and supplies a high-grade Void component. Its handling requires corresponding care.

The Fang of a Basilisk

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Four
Energy Stream void
Class Teeth, Tusks and Horns
Energy Negative
Endowments Necro Endowment

Venom from these fangs is compared in strength with hemlock. Winning it requires confronting an ancient reptile with a body some thirty feet long, a spiked back and a horned head resembling a dragon's.

The creature moves quickly and attacks suddenly. Its gaze can stop a person in place through a stunning effect, adding to the danger of its strike. Its standing as the king of snakes is well earned among those who seek the fang.

The Dagger of an Assassin

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Four
Energy Stream Void
Class Metal
Energy Positive: Negative
Endowments Necro Endowment

Use of this expensive component is commonly advised soon after acquisition. Necro-endowed objects sometimes attract misfortune, making a prolonged stay among stored ingredients undesirable.

Ordinary pointed, forged metal does not readily receive surrounding energy. The killing of innocents, or repeated slaughter of living victims, can give an iron dagger the negative influence of Necro Endowment. Such blades pass on when their former killers lose, sell or are defeated for them. The people offering them may be as ruthless and unpredictable as those former owners.

Black Horn Poison

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Five
Energy Stream Void
Class Teeth, Tusks and Horns
Energy Positive: Negative
Endowments Natural and Necro Endowment

A small vial supplies the full magical requirement. The clear, sticky fluid occasionally seeps from the tip of a Black Unicorn's horn and can act through a mere scratch. Some victims fall into a prolonged deep sleep; others die immediately.

The source animal is comparable in size to a Clydesdale. When threatened, it may rear, kick or trample an attacker, or fight with the poisoned horn as a swordsman uses a blade.

Vampire Blood

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Five
Energy Stream void
Class Bloods
Energy Negative
Endowments Necro Endowment

An airtight black jar is required for storage. More than three minutes of sunlight in a single exposure destroys the ingredient's usefulness. Supplies are difficult to obtain.

Vampirism permanently changes human blood from its positive living state to negative energy. The change is described as a transformation rather than a passing illness. Its resulting ingredient is called Void here, while the same account also associates the corrupted blood with Destruction.

Four Winds Mushroom

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Five
Energy Stream void
Class Mushrooms
Energy Negative
Endowments Necro Endowment

Collect only after a specimen has dried out and is certainly dead. These uncommon little black mushrooms grow nowhere but graveyards, hidden among brush. Early spring is the season to look, often near Mummy Moss. That neighboring growth is a useful clue for only two or three weeks at the start of spring, when the two life cycles overlap.

Destruction

Components of destructive work

Fire and destructive force characterize this stream. Its general rules describe negative, unalterable energy and allow Natural Endowment. Seven classes are named: Wood; Teeth, Tusks and Horns; Ashes; Enchanted Glass; Blood; Claws and Talons; and Mushrooms. The prepared ingredients in the catalogue also record their particular methods of endowment.

Raiding peoples and forest creatures

Pointed ears, sharp teeth and a green cast to the skin mark the Goblins described here. They establish themselves in mountain tunnels or swamp country. Once a mountain is overrun, its dark, winding passages make any attempt to drive them out difficult, and the people sent in may become lost. Raids upon towns and villages are conducted in hordes.

Orcs make their own thick, crude and heavy weapons and wield them with great force. Thousands can gather for war. A camp may remain their home for years before the group moves again, but movement can be as overwhelming as an attack. Such sightings should be reported to the proper officials. Rangers, rather than ordinary hunters, are the appropriate people to confront these warlike creatures.

The Dark Lord of the Woods is associated with the corruption of Black Unicorns. Their appearance is regarded as evidence that he is nearby. The black coat and single horn retain a unicorn's beauty, but the red eyes and poisonous horn mark a profound change from the white unicorn, whose horn is associated with purification and healing. Snorting and pawing the ground may precede a charge.

Harpies occupy little-traveled groves in groups. A tall woman apparently wearing a feathered cloak may be one seeking a male for mating. Their children are always female harpies, whether or not the father is human, and are born alive. Once provoked, the creatures are deadly; their talons can open armor with ease.

Ogres stand between Orcs and Trolls in the general descriptions of their size. They have disproportionately large heads, much hair, unusually colored skin and powerful bodies beneath ragged, foul-smelling clothing. Their appetite includes whatever they can kill, including Humans, Elves and Dwarves. Swamp caves far from settlements are preferred homes, although Ogres have been fought close to villages and towns.

A griffin's forepart belongs to the eagle and its rear to the lion, including the lion's tail and hind legs. Eagles and lions are each regarded as sovereigns of their kind; their combination gives the griffin its reputation for exceptional majesty and even kingship over creatures generally. Griffins are also known as guardians of treasure and other possessions of great value.

Three Magic Matches

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power One
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Ashes
Energy Negative
Endowments Intentional Endowment

Strike all three matches at the same moment, then extinguish them with water to release their magic. The burning represents fire, air and earth; water supplies the fourth element. Each wooden match carries an ancient, potent sulfur preparation at its tip.

Wolf Fangs

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power One
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Not supplied
Energy Positive: Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

Trappers and huntsmen provide the fangs needed for this Destruction ingredient. Tall and lean, the wolf has a long muzzle and a curving tail covered in dense, shaggy hair. It is a swift and particularly deadly forest hunter, believed to be the ancestor of every dog species.

Wolves follow scent and hear across miles. Large family packs hunt under an alpha male's direction, communicating by yips and howls. Their calling is especially frequent beneath a full moon.

Bear Claws

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power One
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Claws and Talons
Energy Positive: Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

High scratches on tree trunks can reveal a bear's territory and help a hunter estimate its size. Claws as long as eight inches can split even strong timber. A bear itself may rise above ten feet in height.

These carnivorous animals defend territory and young aggressively, treating another presence as a threat. The deep growl alone can leave a person frozen with fear. Their formidable claws provide the ingredient used in Destruction work.

Ash of a Celestial Formal Magic Scroll

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power One
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Ashes
Energy Negative
Endowments Intentional Endowment

Burning completes the preparation and releases the destructive energy. The writing on the required Celestial Formal Magic Scroll uses Kraken Ink; its paper is made of Bel Tradisin Cedar. These two component materials acquire their destructive application through the burning.

Goblin Teeth

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Two
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Teeth, Tusks & Horns
Energy Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

Rangers encountered on patrol or at a local tavern may supply these teeth. They know the trade value of Goblin teeth and ears and can make a considerable profit from both.

The Goblins described with this ingredient have dark skin and jagged teeth and rarely exceed six feet in height. They stalk and attack in vicious predatory hordes. Obtaining their remains through the trade avoids the need to seek such a group personally.

Ash of a Formal Magic Earth Scroll

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Two
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Ashes
Energy Negative
Endowments Intentional Endowment

The preparation given for this ash uses Bel Tradisin paper inscribed with Juniper Berries. Burning the completed Earth Formal Magic Scroll releases its power. The process is described as producing a Void ingredient, although the ash is entered here in Destruction at strength two.

Orc Teeth

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Two
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Teeth, Tusks & Horns
Energy Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

Local rangers are the customary source for these teeth. An adult Orc may exceed six feet and has a heavily built body comparable to a bull. It is a dangerous relative of the Goblin.

Orcs also hunt in hordes, though the groups described here are roughly half the size of Goblin hordes. Their willingness to fight to the death, including against their own kind, is offered as the explanation for that difference.

Sarobar Marbles

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Two
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Enchanted Glass
Energy negative
Endowments Tyrrastial Endowment

Seven of these polished-looking black spheres together make the ingredient. Also called Sarobar Spheres, they are perfectly round glass crystals sometimes found inside oysters and clams gathered along the shore. The nearby lakes around Mount Sarobar are associated with their source.

Mount Sarobar, in the Black Hills, is identified as Avalon's only active volcano. Frequent eruptions improve the surrounding topsoil. Volcanic erosion produces the dark beaches from which Darksands Bay takes its name; the bay lies to the north. Blackstone's seafaring people trade both the volcanic glass and the spheres for their livelihood.

Harpy Talons

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Three
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Claws and Talons
Energy Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

Merchants dealing in harpy feathers often carry the talons as well. These are smaller than griffin talons but similarly sharp. They are described as middle-range components, with their catalogue record assigning Destruction strength three.

Harpies roost in tall, leafy trees within old, thick forest. They can stand as high as a person and defend their nesting territory to the death. A female may give birth to as many as five young; despite the birdlike form, they are not hatched from eggs. Wandering into a nesting area can provoke a particularly dangerous encounter.

Ogre Teeth

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Three
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Teeth, Tusks & Horns
Energy Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

A single tooth is more than sufficient for the grade-three ingredient described here. Its value is among the rewards of defeating an Ogre, a difficult task even for an experienced ranger.

The account places a common Ogre at about six feet while allowing individuals above eight feet. A massive, splintered club is its usual weapon, used to crush victims with considerable force.

Blood of a Black Unicorn

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Three
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Blood
Energy Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

The Dark Lord of the haunted wood corrupts these unicorns into his service, changing their blood into a Destruction ingredient. A scratch from the poisoned horn can kill. Encountering a Black Unicorn is taken as a sign that the Lord himself is somewhere in the surrounding woods.

Greater Vampire Ashes

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Four
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Ashes
Energy Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

Purchasing the remains is generally preferable to winning them in combat. A vampire combines unnatural strength with the ability to hypnotize through its eyes and charm through speech. Surviving such an opponent is already a considerable success.

After victory, burn the corpse and retain the ashes for Destruction work. Its blood is also worth preserving as a component. The creature's enduring, predatory life at night makes neither harvest easy to acquire firsthand.

The Hollows Eve Mushroom

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Four
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Mushrooms
Energy Neutral
Endowments Tyrrastial Endowment

The bright orange stem and flat black cap marked with orange spots identify this mushroom. Its name recalls Halloween, the sacred time also called Hollows Eve.

Beyond formal Destruction work, eating it on Hollows Eve can permit sight of, or speech with, the dead by bringing Tyrra and the graveyards into closer contact. Only the solid mushroom is described as safe to consume, and even that form retains otherworldly properties.

Griffin Talons

Record Value
Tyrran Scale of Power Four
Energy Stream Destruction
Class Claws and Talons
Energy Negative
Endowments Natural Endowment

The identifying mark is a single black dot concealed within a crevice of the claw. Genuine griffin talons are rare and difficult to recognize, though merchants who sell the feathers may also have claws available. The account calls them middle-range in strength, while their catalogue position is Destruction four.

The griffin has a lion's hindquarters and an eagle's forelegs, head, feathered breast and talons, with erect ears. Its usual docility ends when defense is necessary. Handling it casually would be unwise: the sharp claws can disembowel a person with one stroke, and it is these claws that hold the magical property.
