DRAE
Introduction
This packet is designed to provide general information about typical Drae as well as more detailed information about Drae that have been born and raised in the Kingdom of Evendarr, however, as with every race of Tyrra, there are always outliers. The information included here is from the Drae point of view and may differ significantly from the accounts told by others outside of the Drae people.
OUT OF GAME INFORMATION
Drae have distinct gray skin, pointed ears, and silver, gray or white hair, including eyebrows and facial hair, though like any other race many Drae dye their hair various colors using elder berries. Players portraying Drae must use gray makeup to achieve this look and wear pointed elf ears, which can be found at costume shops or online. Drae also have gray fingernails, often achieved with nail polish. Their skin tone contrasts with that of humans, creating their unique appearance.
ON DRAE: SHROUDED IN DARKNESS
HONOR OVER ALL
The Drae have refined one of the most inviolable codes of honor in all of Tyrra, forming a foundation for their culture that is unwavering. These ethics are non-negotiable, and any Drae who abandons or strays from this code is branded a "renegade," facing shunning and exile from their kin. Regardless of whether they align with other Drae or companions from across the Kingdoms, it is essential for each Drae to develop a personal Code of Honor that guides their actions.
Serenity in Solitude
Dark Elves are inherently isolationist and cautious about interacting with typical surface dwellers. They prefer to remain in the company of familiar individuals rather than travel with strangers, particularly non-Dark Elves. Having been raised in a world isolated for thousands of years, they have been taught to view all surface dwellers as peculiar and often malevolent. Consequently, Dark Elves tend to stick with those they know and trust. Other races may perceive them as unemotional, solitary, unfriendly, and somewhat paranoid.
Stubborn Traditions
Dark Elves generally view their cultural traditions as superior to others, with their history indicating that they have inhabited Tyrra for significantly longer than other races. This sense of superiority often leads to an audacious belief that they are the quintessential inhabitants of Tyrra. However, Dark Elves typically refrain from openly expressing these views to avoid persecution or conflict. How a character perceives others can vary, but such beliefs often shape their interactions and relationships.
In Death There is Honor
Dark Elves hold no fear of death, regarding it as a moment of great honor, akin to how humans perceive birth. An honorable death ceremony is one of the rare occasions that brings complete satisfaction and joy to a Dark Elf's life. The legacy of honor and respect that one’s family carries forward is among the highest honors a Dark Elf can aspire to.
The Drae Codes of Honor
THE THREE CODES
Dark Elves live their lives guided by three binding codes: loyalty to their Clan, allegiance to their House, and a personal Code of Honor. These principles shape and direct a Dark Elf’s choices and actions. At times, these codes may come into conflict, and it is in these moments that a Dark Elf’s true character is defined.
CLAN HONOR CODE
Clan Honor is above all. Swearing to uphold Clan Honor means that your entire clan shares responsibility for preserving your Honor, just as you are accountable to the clan for maintaining it. If Clan Honor is broken, any clan member may take whatever measures are deemed necessary to restore it. When Honor is compromised, the clan’s name is disgraced until the wrong is corrected. Only the clan leader, or a member granted this privilege by the leader, may swear an oath to Clan Honor. No oath may be taken that contradicts the Clan Honor Code. A written copy of a Clan’s Honor Code.
HOUSE HONOR CODE
The next tier of the Honor Code is House Honor. Swearing to House Honor carries responsibilities similar to those of Clan Honor, but at the level of one’s House. Only the head of the House, or a member granted this privilege by the House leader, may swear to House Honor. No oath may be sworn that conflicts with the codes of either Clan or House Honor. Each House leader should possess a written copy of the House Honor Code, signed in blood by both the House leader and the Clan leader, as a formal declaration of their commitment.
PERSONAL HONOR CODE
The final level of the Honor Code is Personal Honor. Swearing on one’s Personal Honor means one’s word is given and bound unto death, even to the extent of enduring resurrection if necessary. If a Dark Elf breaks their Personal Honor, they must perform ceremonial redemption or take the appropriate actions to restore it. Failing to redeem one’s honor results in being labeled a renegade.
Each Dark Elf must craft a unique Personal Honor Code that mandates how they will and will not carry themselves in the name of Honor. Whenever a Dark Elf swears an oath to their Personal Honor, it becomes a permanent part of their Personal Honor Code and must be upheld. A Dark Elf’s Personal Honor Code is forever evolving as they grow, learn, and experience. These developments are the primary source of conflict within a Dark Elf’s Codes of Honor. Often Dark Elves who find themselves travelling or living amongst the other races of the Tyrran Kingdoms discover these conflicts between the Clan or House and their Personal Code of Honor.
BREAKING AN OATH
If a Dark Elf is bound by an oath that they cannot uphold or was coerced through deceit or magical influence, they may petition a higher-ranking individual to release them from the oath. The person of rank is responsible for investigating the circumstances thoroughly. Once they feel they have made sufficient inquiries, they may decide whether the Dark Elf should remain bound by the oath. This person of rank must inform the oath’s recipient of the questionable nature of the oath and communicate any final decisions to all involved parties. Such cases are rare and treated with severity; it is uncommon for Dark Elves to be released from an oath.
REDEEMING ONE’S HONOR
If Honor is broken at any level of the Code, the guilty party must seek redemption by asking the offended party to contact a titled Dark Elf of higher rank. This ranking Dark Elf will assess the severity of the offense and assign an appropriate task or punishment. The guilty party must complete the task promptly and without resistance. Refusal to accept the punishment allows the offended party to pursue whatever measures they consider necessary to restore justice and uphold their name. The most common agreement between parties is ceremonial redemption.
CEREMONIAL REDEMPTION
Ceremonial redemption is a deeply ingrained practice among Dark Elves, serving as a vital means of restoring Honor after an oath has been broken. This ritual encompasses a wide spectrum of acts, each varying in severity and significance, reflecting the gravity of the transgression and the individual’s standing within their community.
At its simplest, ceremonial redemption may involve the performance of a humble act of service, such as a public apology or the undertaking of a task to benefit the offended party. These gestures, while modest, are essential for acknowledging wrongdoing and demonstrating a commitment to restore one’s Honor.
However, the path to redemption can escalate dramatically, depending on the nature of the betrayal. In more severe cases, a Dark Elf may be required to engage in a ritual of penance, which could include fasting, meditation, or offering gifts to the wronged, aimed at cleansing their spirit and reconciling with their clan. This ritualistic atonement not only serves to purify the individual but also seeks to reaffirm their allegiance to the principles that govern their code of honor.
In extreme instances, when the offense is deemed particularly heinous, the act of ceremonial redemption may culminate in a dramatic display: death to resurrection. This profound act symbolizes the complete obliteration of the individual’s former self, allowing for rebirth into a renewed state of Honor. During this intense ceremony, the Dark Elf is often led through a series of trials, facing the consequences of their actions. The process culminates in a symbolic death, after which the Dark Elf is resurrected, emerging cleansed and revitalized, ready to uphold their oaths with newfound resolve.
Through these varied expressions of ceremonial redemption, Dark Elves emphasize the importance of Honor in their culture, viewing each act as a critical step toward restoring their integrity and reinforcing the bonds of trust within their community.
Drae Magic
Dark Elf magic is an ancient and sophisticated art, intricately woven into the very fabric of their society. Considered some of the oldest developed magic in the world of Tyrra, it reflects the Dark Elves’ deep connection to the shadows and the magical forces that govern them. Rooted in ages of practice and refinement, this magic encompasses a diverse array of disciplines, from elemental manipulation to illusion and enchantment, each steeped in ritual and tradition.
At its core, Dark Elf magic is not merely a tool but a way of life. It shapes their culture, guiding their interactions, beliefs, and even their social structures. Magic is revered as both a source of power and a means of expressing one's honor and loyalty to clan and house. Practitioners of this craft are respected and often hold influential positions within Dark Elf society, tasked with safeguarding their kin and upholding the clan's values.
The Dark Elves’ mastery of magic is often perceived as both a gift and a curse, as it can lead to great triumphs or devastating consequences. Their spells resonate with the essence of Tyrra. This affinity for the magical arts fosters an air of mystery and fear, making them both formidable adversaries and valuable allies in the intricate tapestry of the kingdoms.
As each generation of Dark Elves embraces and expands upon this rich magical legacy, they remain deeply aware of their history and the responsibility that comes with wielding such power. In this way, Dark Elf magic is not only a reflection of their past but also a guiding force for their future, ensuring that their culture thrives amidst the ever-changing tides of the world.
Drae Homelands: Draelonde
Draelonde is a subterranean realm that below the surface of Northern Evendarr, also known as Elfheim. Draelonde is a convoluted kingdom divided into four counties. These four counties are even further divided into several dozen clan territories. While there are no formal divisions for Clan Territories, it is a breach of etiquette and honor to enforce Law in the immediate area around a city or town where you are not a member of the ruling Clan or are not a member of the Royal House. Draelonde consists of four major cities, six smaller towns, and numerous villages and farms, with a total population of around 150,000.
The Draelonde society is steeped in tradition and honor, upheld by a powerful military force known for its discipline, advanced weaponry, and strategic prowess. Trained from a young age, Drae soldiers specialize in both armed and unarmed combat, blending precision strikes with tactical magic to overpower foes. Their unique combat style, honed through centuries of subterranean warfare, makes them a highly respected and feared force throughout the kingdom and beyond. These warriors stand as protectors of the kingdom, safeguarding Draelonde from potential threats and ensuring the safety of its cities, towns, and clans.
Magic flows through Draelonde as naturally as water through a river, with a rich history of powerful practitioners who have mastered ancient and secret arts. The kingdom is home to the most accomplished sorcerers and mages, who wield elemental, shadow, and arcane forces. They draw upon Draelonde’s deep, ancient magic, rumored to be as old as the caverns themselves. The Celestial Houses, prestigious academies within Draelonde, serve as centers of magical learning where promising students are trained in complex spell craft. These mages, who occupy high-ranking positions within society, use their skills not only in warfare but also in everyday life, aiding in construction, agriculture, and even in the healing of the sick. Magic is revered here, woven into nearly every aspect of life and bolstered by the kingdom's connection to ancient, subterranean energies.
The craftsmen of Draelonde are no less significant to the kingdom’s prosperity. Known for their exceptional skill, Drae artisans and blacksmiths produce items of remarkable quality, from intricately detailed armor to finely crafted jewelry and weaponry. The darkstone forges, specific to Draelonde, produce metals with unique properties found only in the depths of the kingdom, which are fashioned into weapons and items of immense durability and strength. Drae craftsmen are respected members of their society, and their creations are highly sought after, not only within Draelonde but also in trade with other kingdoms. The skill of these artisans contributes to Draelonde’s reputation as a place of unmatched craftsmanship and beauty. Trade and markets are vibrant parts of Draelonde's economy, with bustling marketplaces that are scattered across its cities and towns. While isolated, Draelonde maintains a thriving exchange of goods, with the kingdom’s signature black steel weapons, enchanted jewelry, and rare minerals sought by surface dwellers. In return, traders bring exotic goods from the surface, from spices and fabrics to rare plants and herbs. Market days are events of celebration and community, drawing people from distant villages to gather, barter, and socialize. These markets, filled with stalls and merchants, serve as places of both commerce and social connection, where members of different clans interact and share news.
The common people of Draelonde form the backbone of this vibrant kingdom. Farmers, miners, builders, and merchants all contribute to the kingdom’s sustenance and strength. The Drae value hard work, discipline, and loyalty, traits that are ingrained from childhood. Each citizen, whether they work the mines or weave enchanted cloths, takes pride in their role, understanding that they are part of a larger tapestry. Community is strong in Draelonde, with each person loyal to their clan and bound by a shared sense of duty and honor. Together, they create a thriving society that, despite its isolation, is one of the most unique and respected kingdoms in all of Tyrra.
CHILDHOOD
Drae childhood is a stark and challenging period, marked by an intense regimen of education, study, and relentless training. From an early age, young Drae are immersed in a world of rigorous discipline designed to prepare them for the complex demands of adulthood in Draelonde. They are taught the foundational elements of Drae culture, including mastery of ancient lore, combat skills, and the subtle art of spellcraft—all to uphold the honor of their clans and houses. The days are long, filled with little rest as children train not only their minds but also their bodies, developing strength, agility, and resilience. Yet, there are fleeting moments of enjoyment: whispered games in the shadows, thrilling tales told by elders, and rare, cherished times of laughter with friends. These small glimpses of fun punctuate the otherwise demanding structure of their youth, offering brief but essential reprieve, allowing the young Drae to bond and foster loyalty within the clan. Despite the unforgiving path, these moments of light help to shape their unbreakable spirits and lay the foundation for the camaraderie and honor so highly prized in Drae society.
COMING OF AGE
The coming of age for a Drae is a solemn and formidable journey, marking the transition from the rigorous demands of youth to the full responsibilities of adulthood within the clan and kingdom. Each Drae’s rite of passage is a deeply individual yet universally respected ceremony, reflecting the unyielding principles of their society. From their earliest days, Drae youth have been molded through relentless training in combat, ancient magic, and the Code of Honor that defines their culture. Upon reaching maturity, they face a series of tests designed to prove their loyalty to their Clan and House and affirm their understanding of their Personal Honor Code, a fluid but sacred set of oaths they've sworn to uphold.
The first stage of the rite involves a trial of discipline and endurance, often taking place in the silent, twisting caverns that lie beneath the cities of Draelonde. Here, under the watchful eyes of the clan matriarchs the young Drae must face personal challenges tailored to expose any weakness or doubt. For some, this means rigorous combat exercises; for others, it is a test of magical prowess or strategic thinking. The trial is designed to bring forth the core of who they are, stripping away any illusions until they emerge as their truest, strongest selves.
After this initial test, each young Drae is presented with an oath, often overseen by a titled Dark Elf of higher rank who guides them in swearing an oath to Clan, House, and Personal honor. This binding vow will shape their future actions, entrenching them further into the values of loyalty, respect, and an almost inviolable duty to the Drae legacy. If they successfully complete this ceremony, they are granted the full privileges of their society, including the right to defend the Clan and uphold its honor in both peace and war. The final stage of the coming of age is a ceremonial act of honor where each new adult is presented in the clan’s ancestral hall, where family and respected leaders welcome them with both pride and solemnity. Gifts from skilled craftsmen of the Clan are bestowed upon them— perhaps a weapon forged in the fires of their home territory, enchanted with ancestral magic, or an item signifying their place within the intricate network of Drae alliances and rivalries.
Though grueling, this coming-of-age process cements a Drae’s bond with their heritage and gives them a place within their structured, honor-bound society. From this day forth, they carry the weight of their Clan’s history on their shoulders, honoring the matriarchal hierarchy and preserving the delicate balance between their Clan, House, and personal honor. For the Drae, adulthood is less a step into independence and more a seamless integration into the greater fabric of Draelonde—a lifelong commitment to duty, honor, and the legacy of their people.
MARRIAGE
In Drae society, marriage is a revered union steeped in tradition, with a unique practice that aligns with the matriarchal nature of their culture: it is the female who formally asks for the male’s hand in marriage. This proposal is not taken lightly and occurs only after extensive consideration of both families' standings, alliances, and honor codes. When a Drae female decides to ask for a male's hand, she presents him with a ceremonial blade, symbolizing her willingness to share both her strength and loyalty. If he accepts, he takes the blade as a sign of his commitment to her and her clan’s honor, pledging his own loyalty in return. The marriage itself is a grand event attended by the highest-ranking members of both clans, where oaths are sworn, and tokens of their union are exchanged, often enchanted by celestial magic to signify eternal bonds. The male's acceptance brings not only a union of individuals but often strengthens or solidifies clan ties, and in some cases, establishes new alliances. This ritual underscores the importance of honor, loyalty, and the enduring respect for matriarchal governance in Drae culture.
DRAELONDE GOVERNMENT
Draelonde’s government operates under a matriarchal hierarchy, governed by a ruling class of celestial magic practitioners. At the top of this society sits the High Matriarch, a powerful mage who commands the respect of all Drae and serves as both the spiritual and political leader of the kingdom. The celestial magic users, known as the Starborn Council, form the core of the government, each possessing unique, ancient skills in celestial ritual. These Matriarchs are not only formidable magic wielders but are also deeply knowledgeable in history, strategy, and the intricate laws that govern Draelonde. Rank within the government is determined by magical prowess, wisdom, and lineage, with elder Matriarchs often grooming younger, promising celestial users to take on roles of authority. Each city within Draelonde has its own appointed Matriarch, who oversees local governance, enforces laws, and ensures that the honor codes are upheld. This matriarchal system places strong emphasis on the guidance of women with exceptional magical abilities, creating a balance of power that intertwines governance, spirituality, and magic, keeping the kingdom unified under a common celestial purpose.
DAY TO DAY IN DRAELONDE
The daily life of a Drae is a blend of rigorous duty, intense study, and intricate social interactions, all governed by their deep-rooted cultural traditions. Mornings begin early, often with meditation or communal gatherings to strengthen bonds within clans. Afterward, Drae engage in their respective roles, whether as skilled craftsmen, magic practitioners, or warriors in training. Education is paramount; young Drae spend hours studying celestial magic, combat techniques, and the intricate histories of their people. While the days are filled with discipline and dedication, moments of joy are woven into their routines. Evenings may bring gatherings where Drae share stories, enjoy music, and participate in traditional games, allowing them to connect and unwind. This balance of hard work and camaraderie fosters a strong sense of community, ensuring that every Drae contributes to the honor and legacy of their society while finding solace in shared experiences.
Drae In Evendarr
When Drae venture into the human Kingdom of Evendarr, they step into a world markedly different from their own subterranean realm. The vast landscapes and bustling towns present a stark contrast to the intricacies of Draelonde. The Drae, accustomed to the shadows and depths of their homeland, find themselves navigating the bright, open spaces filled with human activity and vibrant culture. Initial interactions can be tense, as humans often view the Drae with a mix of awe and suspicion, fueled by centuries of tales surrounding their magic and martial prowess. The Drae must carefully balance their inherent pride with the need to adapt to the customs and social structures of the human kingdom.
Assimilation into human society proves both challenging and enriching for the Drae. They bring with them a wealth of knowledge in craftsmanship, celestial magic, and military strategy, which often earns them respect among humans seeking to improve their own skills. However, the Drae must also contend with the misunderstandings that arise from cultural differences. Their matriarchal traditions and unique honor codes can be perplexing to humans, leading to occasional conflicts or misinterpretations of intent. Despite these hurdles, many Drae find ways to integrate, establishing friendships and alliances that benefit both communities. They often participate in trade, sharing their exquisite crafts and magical artifacts while learning the nuances of human commerce and diplomacy.
Life away from their kin poses its own emotional challenges for the Drae. While they may enjoy the freedoms of exploring new environments and engaging with diverse cultures, a sense of longing for the familiar comforts of Draelonde lingers in their hearts. The camaraderie of their clans, the shared rituals, and the intricate tapestry of their subterranean life cannot be easily replaced. As they forge new lives in Evendarr, the Drae carry their heritage with them, using it as both a shield and a bridge in this foreign land. They strive to honor their past while embracing the opportunities that arise from their interactions with humans, weaving a new narrative that enriches both their identities and those of the people they encounter.
EVENDARRIAN POLITICS
The Drae have historically maintained a cautious distance from the Evendarrian government, preferring to focus on their own internal affairs and cultural practices rather than getting entangled in the complexities of human politics. This reluctance stems from their deep-rooted belief in the superiority of their own society, as well as a desire to avoid the potential for conflict that might arise from direct involvement in governance. However, the Drae are not entirely absent from the political landscape of Evendarr; they often act as invaluable consultants, especially in matters related to military strategy and defense.
When the human rulers seek advice, they find in the Drae a wealth of experience and expertise shaped by centuries of their own military traditions and celestial magic. The Drae's unique perspective, honed in the rigorous training and honor codes of their society, allows them to provide insights that are both practical and innovative. This collaboration typically takes the form of private councils or strategic discussions, where Drae leaders and military tacticians share their knowledge and experience without directly participating in the governance itself.
While the Drae prefer to remain in the background, their contributions are highly respected, often shaping the direction of military initiatives. As advisors, they emphasize the importance of strategy, honor, and preparedness, drawing from their own values to instill a sense of discipline among human forces. This partnership not only reinforces the Drae's reputation as formidable allies but also fosters a mutual respect that transcends cultural differences. Ultimately, the Drae's involvement in Evendarrian affairs is characterized by a balance of independence and cooperation, allowing them to maintain their identity while positively influencing the kingdom's approach to governance and defense.
Life Within Evendarr
THE BLACK VEIL
In the shadows of the Kingdom of Evendarr, a clandestine organization known as The Black Veil operates, skillfully weaving its web of espionage and intrigue. Founded and run by the infamous Valindra Yen, this league is comprised of skilled operatives trained in the arts of stealth, deception, and information gathering. With their ancient knowledge of magic and keen tactical minds, they have established The Black Veil as a premier source for espionage services, catering to various clients ranging from nobles seeking intelligence on rival houses to merchants looking to outmaneuver their competitors.
The Black Veil is structured like a well-oiled machine, with each member specializing in different aspects of espionage. Some are masters of disguise, able to infiltrate high society unnoticed, while others excel in the art of reconnaissance, gathering information from the most secure locations. Their natural agility and innate magical abilities enhance their skills, allowing them to traverse the kingdom with an ease that belies the dangers of their work. Their methods are often unorthodox, employing a blend of magic and subterfuge that makes them particularly formidable in the world of spies.
While the league operates in the shadows, it is not without its code of ethics. They place great importance on honor and loyalty, ensuring that their services are employed for purposes that align with their moral compass. As such, they refuse contracts that involve wanton violence or betrayal of their oaths. This commitment to a higher standard sets them apart from other mercenary groups, drawing in clients who value discretion and integrity. As a result, The Black Veil has earned a reputation as not only effective but also trustworthy, a rare trait in the world of espionage. Through their strategic maneuvers, the Black Veil influence the political landscape of Evendarr, shaping events from behind the scenes while remaining ever vigilant in the pursuit of their own interests.
THE OBSIDIAN CRUCIBLE
In the bustling cities of Evendarr, nestled among the cobblestone streets and market squares, lies The Obsidian Crucible, an alchemist’s outfit specializing in the craft of poisons. This establishment, shrouded in mystery, is renowned for its expertise in concocting lethal brews derived from the unique flora and fauna of the Drae homeland, Draelonde. The alchemists here meticulously study the potent toxins extracted from the underground spiders, whose venom can induce paralysis, and the vibrant frogs that secrete deadly compounds through their skin. With a rich tapestry of knowledge and tradition, The Obsidian Crucible has become a sought-after source for those who wish to wield the power of poison.
Led by Lady Elara Vexaris, the Obsidian Crucible utilizes ingredients that are both rare and powerful and they blends the secrets of their subterranean origins with the needs of the surface dwellers. The alchemists craft a variety of poisons, each with tailored effects, from subtle, slow-acting toxins for the stealthy assassin to rapid-acting venoms designed for immediate impact. Their signature concoctions often feature the Black Spores of Malakar, known for their mind-altering effects, and the Crimson Vines, which can inflict excruciating pain. The careful selection of ingredients reflects the Drae’s deep understanding of nature, as they harness the deadly attributes of plants and creatures that thrive in the shadows. Despite the lethal nature of their craft, The Obsidian Crucible operates with a strict ethical code. The Drae alchemists understand the gravity of their creations and are dedicated to ensuring that their poisons do not fall into the wrong hands. As a result, they implement a rigorous vetting process for clients, assessing their intentions and motivations before any transaction takes place. This commitment to honor and responsibility ensures that the alchemical arts serve not only the needs of Evendarr’s denizens but also uphold the Drae's legacy, allowing them to navigate the complexities of life in a foreign kingdom while remaining true to their cultural values.
THE SILENT WAKE
In the heart of Evendarr’s shipyards, the Drae shipwright Kaelen Thryss, proprietor of The Silent Wake, has crafted a unique line of vessels known as Whisper Wakes. These small, swift raft-like ships are designed for stealth, easily attached to the sides of larger Evendarrian galleys and perfect for covert operations over water. Built from lightweight, darkwood planks sourced from the subterranean forests of Draelonde, each Whisper Wake is constructed to glide silently across water, practically invisible in low light. Kaelen, a master engineer, is renowned for his precision and innovation; he outfits each vessel with a specialized rudder system that minimizes wake and uses waterproofed compartments to ensure they stay balanced even in choppy waters. With a lifetime steeped in both engineering and Drae secrecy, Kaelen has tailored the Whisper Wakes to serve as invaluable assets for those seeking undetected entry into the harbors of both friend and foe.
Kaelen’s expertise goes beyond the crafting of these silent vessels; he also trains small crews of Drae and Evendarrian operatives to operate the Whisper Wakes with absolute precision. His rigorous training program focuses on night navigation, evasion techniques, and tactical deployment, preparing his crews to slip in and out of guarded harbors or across treacherous rivers without alerting watchful eyes. Kaelen insists that each operator understand the intricacies of the ship, treating it as an extension of themselves, and his stringent standards have earned him both respect and a hint of fear among those he trains. The secrecy of his methods is as tightly held as the design of the Whisper Wakes themselves; only those who have proven their loyalty to Evendarr or the Drae are trusted to learn the skills necessary to pilot these elusive craft.
Despite his dedication to Evendarr’s covert military efforts, Kaelen remains fiercely independent, taking on only select contracts that align with his own sense of honor. Known for his complex personality and strict code, he rejects any work that might put innocent lives at risk or compromise his integrity. His shipyard, hidden deep in Evendarr’s western ports, is accessible only to those with permission from high-ranking officials or by Kaelen’s own invitation. As such, the Whisper Wakes have gained an almost mythical status, with rumors circulating among Evendarr’s military and navy about their ghostly presence on the water. Kaelen’s devotion to his craft, combined with his reputation for discretion, has cemented him as one of Evendarr’s most valuable — yet elusive — maritime assets.
Tales of Draelonde Legend
ZHARAD THE SHADOWWALKER
In the ancient annals of Drae history, one name stands out as a paragon of valor and cunning: Zharad the Shadowalker, a warrior who rose during the darkest hours of the Old War, when Orcs and Hobgoblins surged through the depths of Draelonde, threatening to consume it entirely. Zharad, a young but skilled Drae warrior, had a reputation for swift strikes and mastery within shadows, moving through the darkness as naturally as he breathed. His spear, rare obsidian forged in the under fires of Draelonde, was said to hold a mysterious enchantment that fed on the fear of his enemies.
When word of the invasion spread, Zharad answered the call to arms, joining a dwindling Drae militia, outnumbered and desperate. The Orc and Hobgoblin armies had raided the borders, leaving villages in ruin. Yet Zharad saw an opportunity in what others viewed as defeat. He proposed a daring counterattack, one that would lead a small group of warriors behind enemy lines to sever the command chain of the advancing hordes. Draelonde’s council, hesitant to approve what they saw as a suicidal strategy, eventually relented after Zharad himself swore on his clan and House Honor that his spear would not return to its scabbard until the invaders were crushed or he lay slain in the attempt.
In a series of daring raids, Zharad and his company struck at the heart of the Orc and Hobgoblin encampments, moving like wraiths under the cover of night. Known as the “Nightfall Ambushes,” these brutal assaults turned the tide of the war. Zharad’s cunning and mastery of magic bewildered the enemy, who began to speak of a “shadow demon” moving through their ranks. Zharad personally hunted down and felled three of the Hobgoblin warlords, each one meeting their end before they could sound an alarm. Yet, his greatest feat came when he faced the Orc chieftain, Grahmal the Behemoth, a creature of monstrous size and strength.
Their battle was said to have shaken the very caverns. Zharad, wielding his obsidian spear, evaded the beast’s swings, his agility allowing him to wear down Grahmal slowly, like water breaking down stone. Finally, as the battle dragged on, Zharad found an opening and struck deep, his blade finding the chieftain’s heart. Grahmal’s fall sent a shockwave of fear through the Orc ranks, and soon, the invaders scattered, fleeing from Draelonde’s depths.
Zharad returned to his people victorious, but he bore the scars of a hundred battles, each a testament to his bravery and sacrifice. To this day, Drae warriors look to the legend of Zharad the Shadowalker as a symbol of resilience, of the power of shadows wielded in honor and defiance. Statues and tapestries commemorate his life in the great cities of Draelonde, where the light of his deed’s shines through the depths, a story of victory over all odds.
YSSARA THE VEILKEEPER
In the veiled history of Draelonde, where legends and shadows intertwine, few figures shine as brightly as Yssara the Veilkeeper, a powerful matriarch who wielded her wisdom and magic to weave unity among the Drae clans during the Great Turmoil. This period threatened to tear Draelonde asunder, as rival clans feuded over ancient disputes and divisions of territory. Yet Yssara, a high- ranking magus of the celestial arts and head of her prestigious House, foresaw the ruin that civil war would bring. With the knowledge of countless ancestors guiding her and unmatched prowess in Drae magic, she rose as the voice of reason and diplomacy.
As tensions escalated, Yssara called a rare gathering of all clan leaders, an event known as the Council of Shadows, held in a secret chamber deep within the Heartstone Cavern. There, she unveiled a symbol of ancient unity— a stone imbued with an ancestral enchantment that only a Drae of noble spirit could wield. In the presence of this relic, Yssara’s words carried weight that transcended her title. She spoke of the blood they all shared, their roots entwined in the same soil, and the sacrifices of their forebears to preserve Draelonde from the threats of outsiders. Her message was clear: a civil war would destroy what countless generations had protected. Yet words alone did not secure peace; Yssara’s wisdom extended beyond rhetoric. She mediated deeply personal disputes, addressing grievances between clans with fairness and insight that left even the most bitter leaders impressed. For one clan, she brokered a marriage alliance; for another, she offered a share of her own territory as a token of goodwill. The most volatile clans were granted access to sacred knowledge she had long safeguarded, potent spells and protective enchantments that reminded them of the power and purpose they held as united Drae.
After days of tense negotiations, Yssara’s patience and empathy prevailed. The clans signed an accord, known as the Pledge of the Veil, in which they swore loyalty to Draelonde above their own interests, pledging to defend each other against any threat from within or beyond. Yssara became known as the “Veilkeeper,” her title honoring the wisdom that kept their world shrouded from chaos and ruin. Even now, the Veilkeeper's tale lives on, a testament to how a single Drae’s strength of spirit can bind an entire kingdom together.
AELTHIR, THE SKYWATCHER
Among the Drae legends, there exists the tale of Aelthir, the Skywatcher, whose life was a tapestry woven with dreams and omens that defied his people’s isolated nature. Aelthir was born under a rare alignment of stars, a birth marked by a fierce windstorm that swept through the caverns of Draelonde. From his earliest days, it was said he could see beyond the veil of shadows—beyond the caverns, to places the Drae dared not tread. He was touched by a gift feared among the Drae: visionary sight.
As Aelthir grew, so did his visions, vivid and strange, with glimpses of the world above the caves and cities of Draelonde. Yet, unlike his kin, Aelthir yearned for the unknown and spoke of creatures beyond their myths—winged beasts that soared through open skies, and forests where magic pulsed from every leaf and root. His Clan marked him as a dreamer, one whose feet would never be planted on the stone paths of tradition. But the elders feared that his visions were not mere wanderings of the mind. They sensed he had been chosen by something powerful, for purposes beyond their understanding.
One day, a premonition gripped Aelthir so intensely that it left him fevered and bedridden. He spoke of a darkness creeping from the depths of Tyrra, a curse meant to swallow all life. This ancient darkness was no creature of muscle and bone but a living shadow, a being long thought destroyed during the Old Wars. Fearing the omen, the elders forbade him to speak of it, lest he invite ruin. But Aelthir knew what he saw was real, and he would not turn away from the fate before him.
One night, as his visions warned of the darkness’s approach, Aelthir left his people. Armed with his knowledge of spells passed down by forgotten ancestors and wielding the Staff of the Skyfall as he called it, claiming it to be a relic that holds the power of the storm, he embarked on a journey few would dare: he ventured to the surface, seeking the power to stop the creature’s rise. Months passed with no word from Aelthir, and his kin assumed the worst— that he had been lost to the treacherous unknown, claimed by beasts of the surface or driven mad by the vastness of the world beyond.
Yet, on the eve of what would have been his fiftieth year, Aelthir returned, bearing with him a thunderous power that none had ever seen. His skin glowed faintly with light from an enchanted crystal he had bound to his staff, and he carried in his eyes a wisdom that seemed to transcend his mortal self. In the depths of the Heartstone Caverns, Aelthir battled the ancient darkness, summoning the storm itself, his spells bringing lightning and wind that rattled even the foundations of Draelonde. At the cost of his own life, Aelthir drove the shadow creature back into the chasm from which it had come, sealing it with a spell that bound it for a thousand years.
To this day, Aelthir, the Skywatcher, is honored as a mythic figure whose courage and foresight saved Draelonde from certain destruction. His staff was said to have been lost in the depths of the Heartstone Caverns, sparking legends that only those chosen by fate might uncover it again. In Drae society, it’s whispered that the spirit of Aelthir still watches over them, guarding against threats hidden in both darkness and light. His name is invoked by those who dare to look beyond the bounds of their world, a reminder that sometimes the greatest strength lies in the courage to embrace the unknown.
