MYSTIC WOOD ELVES

Introduction

This packet is designed to provide general information about typical Mystic Wood Elves as well as more detailed information about Mystic Wood Elves that have been born and raised in the Kingdom of Evendarr, however, as with every race of Tyrra, there are always outliers. The information included here is from the Mystic Wood Elves’ point of view and may differ significantly from the accounts told by others outside of the Mystic Wood Elves people.

On Mystic Wood Elves: An Esoteric Enigma

Truly Elves

In the heart of the Northern Marches, nestled in the northern reaches of Ravenholt and near the Volta border, lies a remarkable place simply known as "the Mystic Wood." This enchanted forest teems with spirits and mystical energies and is inhabited by the unique Mystic Wood Elves. While they may not be considered "true" elves by some, these enigmatic beings share certain traits with Wild and Quentari elves, such as pointed ears and exceptionally long lifespans. However, they possess distinct features, notably a pair of small horns that sprout high on their foreheads. Despite these differences, Mystic Wood Elves proudly identify as genuine Elves.

Wandering Artisans

Renowned for their craftsmanship and artistry, these vibrant and inquisitive people frequently venture beyond the boundaries of the Mystic Wood to trade their exquisite wares. They are a people marked by boundless curiosity and a strong wanderlust, often exploring remote corners of Tyrra that few other people have ever reached. This adventurous spirit has allowed them to forge connections with distant lands and peoples, exchanging not only goods but also knowledge, stories, and cultural insights. As such, Mystic Wood Elves are often seen as bridges between the mystical realm of their forest home and the diverse tapestry of Tyrra's civilizations, fostering a sense of unity and understanding among its inhabitants.

Freedom Above All

Mystic Wood Elves hold a strong aversion to all forms of enslavement, whether it be through conventional slavery, abduction, or magical enchantments and alchemical controls. For instance, should a Mystic Wood Elf come across a Dominate elixir, they are likely to destroy it and may attempt to liberate individuals ensnared by such charms. Their commitment to freedom and autonomy extends not only to their fellow Elves but also to all sentient beings, regardless of race. This unwavering dedication to the principles of liberty has led them to act as guardians of individual rights and advocates for justice across the realms they traverse. It is not uncommon to find Mystic Wood Elves championing the cause of oppressed peoples and actively working to dismantle systems of oppression wherever they encounter them on their journeys.

The Mystic Wood

The Mystic Wood itself predominantly comprises white pine and sugar maple trees, interspersed with abundant juniper, comfrey, and mullein. Encircling the Wood is a ring of ancient trees, towering higher than any others in Tyrra. Covering more than an eighth of the Barony of Ravenholt, known as Eastwyck, this region is bordered by the Silver River and Volta to the west, while the Barbarian Northlands lie north of Ravenholt.

While many Mystic Wood Elves can trace their lineage directly to the Mystic Wood and consider it a cherished destination in their lives, numerous other communities throughout Tyrra have emerged from different origins. Exploring the local history of the lands you visit will unveil unique cultural and historical distinctions among these communities.

Jovial, With a Side of Attitude

Mystic Wood Elves don't necessarily view themselves as superior to others; instead, they understand that they are part of the cosmic tapestry. This doesn't mean they don't take anything seriously, but their extended Elven lifespans provide them with a unique vantage point. They are often seen as mischievous with just a touch of attitude when confronted about their carefree disposition.

When embarking on a journey, Mystic Wood Elves always remember that the journey itself is where real enjoyment lies! They never forget to slow down and appreciate life's simple pleasures. For the Mystic Wood Elves, there is always something new to discover around every corner, and they make sure they never squander these precious opportunities!

Mystic Wood Elves typically present this side of their personality in their garb. Their rule of thumb is that it should be neat, cozy, and whimsical. Neat, because it's best to begin that way, even though it's unlikely to remain so. Comfortable, because you deserve to feel at ease. And whimsical, because if it lacks a touch of amusement, what's the point? Many Mystics often opt for vibrant, multi-pocketed outfits, perfect for storing various trinkets and essentials.

From Day To Day: In Mystic Wood Elf Society

A Deeper Code of Honor

Despite their cheerful dispositions, Mystic Wood Elves adhere to their own deeply ingrained code of honor. Although it may not align with the conventional notions of honor held by others, it is uniquely theirs, and they make an effort to uphold it, even without openly acknowledging its existence.

For a Mystic Wood Elf, your word is your solemn commitment. Promises are honored. Promises extracted through threats, torture, or coercion hold no validity. It's considered dishonorable to engineer situations that force another to knowingly break an oath. The truth is often stranger and less believable than fiction and is best approached with partial truths or presented in such a way that it defies belief. Mystic Wood Elves are crafty with innuendo and choose their words carefully.

Employing charming magical effects suggests, at the very least, a profound lack of imagination, or worse, moral, and ethical decay. Mystic Wood Elves live with the understanding of “Why negate another's free will when your reason or clever persuasion can guide them toward a path they perceive as their own and is resistant to dispelling?”

A Mystic Wood Elves clan is their family, and Clan Elders are akin to parental figures. While personal affections may not extend to all clan members, blood remains thicker than water.

Vendettas concern only two parties: the wrongdoer and the wronged. If innocent bystanders suffer during the course of a Mystic Wood Elves revenge, proper restitution must be offered. They never rush for revenge but rather wait for the opportune moment to present itself. Vengeance is a dish best served cold.

Mystic Wood Elves strive to assist those who extend their help to them. No act of kindness is too small to warrant reciprocation. Wealth is of lesser importance compared to the favors exchanged. Bartering is the lifeblood of a Mystic Wood Elf’s world.

Mystic Wood Elves believe all living beings deserve respect until they demonstrate otherwise. They try not to seek or initiate conflict, but rather to conclude it. Any endeavor worth pursuing merits being done correctly. To a Mystic Wood Elf, creations and deeds are reflections of themselves, embodying their skill and dedication as an artisan. They are defined by their actions.

Magic

Other than a strong aversion to magics that prohibit another’s freedoms, such as Charm spells, Mystic Wood Elves are no more or less interested in magic than any other race.

The Mystic Wood Elves' extended lifespans, combined with their unwavering dedication to their chosen crafts, render them exceptionally prolific scholars. With the luxury of more time at their disposal, they delve deep into the realms of knowledge, honing their skills to extraordinary levels. Whether they are practitioners of Earth or Celestial arts, they consistently outshine their contemporaries through their relentless commitment to their chosen pursuits. This enduring commitment to excellence is deeply ingrained in their culture. To the Mystic Wood Elves, their deeds and crafts are not mere pastimes; they are extensions of themselves. Consequently, they approach each endeavor with a profound sense of personal investment. This mindset drives them to consistently strive for the highest standards of quality and mastery, and it sets them apart as true practitioners who leave an enduring mark on their chosen circle of expertise.

Lifespan

Mystic Wood Elves do not experience slower maturation compared to other races; rather, their unique longevity sets them apart. It is not uncommon for them to reach remarkably advanced ages, with some reputedly living as long as six hundred years before succumbing to the passage of time itself.

This exceptional lifespan is not indicative of a protracted youth but rather a prolonged journey through the stages of life. Mystic Wood Elves go through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood much like other races, but their extended years afford them a wealth of experiences, knowledge, and wisdom that few can match. Consequently, they become repositories of a vast cultural heritage, often acting as the living historians and guardians of their traditions. This remarkable longevity contributes to their distinct perspective on the world, where the ebb and flow of time takes on a different significance.

Childhood:

Mystic Wood Elves have long been regarded as a people in decline, and while their efforts to increase their population are consistently enthusiastic, their birth rate remains relatively low. Assessing the actual population figures of their people at any given time is a challenging task. Among Mystic Wood Elves, the arrival of children is a rare and treasured event. Their existence is cherished and supported by the family, clan, and the entire race.

In the protective embrace of the Mystic Wood, young children are often sheltered from the outside world. During their parents' journeys, these children are fostered within the clan, a practice aimed at imparting a diverse range of skills and nurturing valuable connections. The well-being of these young ones is defended without reservation, as they represent the hope and future of the entire Mystic Wood Elf people. They are granted every possible opportunity to learn, grow, and flourish in an environment that values their potential and contributions.

Coming of Age

Creativity and diversity are actively encouraged as essential tools for learning and acquiring the skills needed to thrive and flourish among Mystic Wood Elves. For a Mystic child, their primary responsibility is clear: to absorb knowledge and grow into an adult capable of reciprocating the support of the community. This ability to contribute back to the group defines adulthood within Mystic Wood Elf society.

Every individual among the Mystic Wood Elves plays a vital role in the collective well-being of the clan and family, contributing according to their unique skills and talents. The emphasis lies on individuals and their capabilities, rather than adhering to a matriarchal or patriarchal structure. Individuals belong to families, families to extended families, and these, in turn, form clans.

Mystic Wood Elves typically reach adulthood between the ages of forty and seventy-five, a reflection of their long lifespans. This extended lifespan allows them to approach their rites of passage with a less hurried demeanor than some others. When a young Mystic Wood Elf is deemed ready to claim adult status, they embark on a significant journey, often following a festival, with the successes of their elders serving as inspiration.

During this journey, removed from the comfort of familial support, they seek to discover their own strengths and contributions to the group. This process usually spans around a month, but there is no scorn attached to longer journeys, spanning years or even decades. Upon their return, the young adults are sponsored by an adult member of their clan. They must demonstrate their gifts and contributions to the community through the telling of a tale that embodies their newfound skills. This marks the moment when they receive their adult road name or names and are introduced to the clans at the next festival as full-fledged members of the community.

Upon acceptance into a clan as an adult, Mystic Wood Elves receive a clan tattoo and are inducted into their clan's earth circle. These tattoos vary in design, with specific motifs denoting their respective clans, such as the triangle motif for Daemonae, a circle for Jongleur, and a square for Ahora. These tattoos are not displayed lightly, much like how a Mystic Wood Elf typically guards their Elven name from public knowledge.

Adult Mystic Wood Elves lead a nomadic lifestyle, traveling extensively throughout Tyrra as itinerant tradespeople. During their journeys, they continue to learn new stories and skills, acquire goods, and establish connections that enrich their lives and their community in ways that would be unattainable through cultural isolation.

Death

Within the Mystic Wood Elf society, a potent cultural "legend" revolves around "The Road," also known as the "Spirit Road" or "The Long Road." This conceptual path serves as a visualization of what occurs to a spirit when the physical body that encapsulates it ceases to exist. Its manifestation is influenced by the collective strength of belief among those who embrace it.

Thus, children are taught the following:

“In olden days, each death was a permanent death, for creatures were unable to find their ways back to the lands of the living. Thus, was built the ‘Long Road,’ and the spirits of many creatures gave up their chance to return to the lands of the living so that they could be markers along the path for others. All people walk the long road back to life, not only Mystic Wood Elves. It was built as an act of peace, broad enough for all, that death shall have no dominion.”

In the lexicon of Mystic Wood Elf terminology, it's customary for them to describe the concept of permanent death as "Embarking on the Long Road." The most solemn and binding oaths a Mystic can undertake often invoke this idea, such as: "May I embark on the Long Road if I..."

In this conceptual realm, the Long Road extends between the realms of the living and the enigmatic "Sea of Dreams." This vast sea represents the ultimate destination for those who have experienced their final death and serves as the repository for the entirety of racial memory.

Naming Traditions

Mystic Wood Elves employ multiple names to identify the same individual, and these names fall into two distinct categories: their Elven Name and their Road Name.

Elven Name: The Elven Name, given to individuals by their parents at birth, is predominantly used among Mystic Wood Elves from the same clan or region. This name holds significant weight, as powerful and binding oaths can be solemnly sworn upon it. While there is neither an obligation nor impoliteness associated with sharing or withholding one's Elven name, doing so often signifies a formal introduction. When a Mystic Wood Elf chooses to disclose their Elven Name to an outsider, it conveys a sense of trust and respect in their interaction.

Road Name: A Mystic Wood Elf’s Road Name can be inspired by a significant event in their life, a cherished ideal, or an attitude that they embody. It may also allude to their outward physical appearance. Examples of such Road Names include "Antithesis," "Curious," and "Greybear." Road Names are typically either selected by the Mysti Wood Elf themselves or bestowed upon them by friends, family, and acquaintances. Depending on the situation or context, a Mysti Wood Elf may go by multiple Road Names. The Road Name is the primary means by which Mystic Wood Elves introduce themselves to others and is a key aspect of their identity within the community.

Secrets of the Wood

The ancestral homeland of the Mystic Wood Elves is the Mystic Wood situated in Evendarr. However, over time, various clans have emerged from Mystic Wood Elves who embarked on journeys to other regions across Tyrra.

One of the remarkable aspects of the Mystic Wood is the presence of sentient Clan Circles. These Clan Circles within the Mystic Wood possess a form of sentience and, on occasion, the ability to communicate, although this communication is not always direct. This unique characteristic is not widely known beyond the confines of the Mystic Wood, but it is not a closely guarded secret either. Many individuals who have never encountered one of these sentient circles often dismiss the notion as a mere fairy tale. However, those who have received Speaker training are well aware of the truth behind this phenomenon and can attest to its existence.

Community Structure

The central social framework among Mystic Wood Elves revolves around loosely connected clans. Within the Mystic Wood, there exist five major clan groupings, and they typically maintain amicable and cooperative relationships with one another.

Clan Ahora: Clan Ahora excels in various forms of communication, often taking on roles as storytellers, educators, diplomats, bards, or performers. They are generally known for their eloquence and the gift of gab. The name "Ahora" has been interpreted to mean "aware," which reflects their keen perception and sharp eyesight. Ahora members are typically the first to spot things and quick to share their observations with others. They possess a naturally changeable disposition and are prone to sudden shifts in mood. If you find their current demeanor unfavorable, just give it a moment, as it's likely to transform in no time.

The name of Clan Ahora’s Circle is Harmony.

Clan Jongleur: Among the clans, Clan Jongleur stands out as the most mischievous and, perhaps, the most approachable. The name "Jongleur" is humorously translated as an ancient term for "curious one who will eat all your food." Members of this clan tend to exude cheerfulness and possess an insatiable curiosity that knows no bounds. Most of them seem to possess an extensive knowledge of the local food sources and resources. If they don't have what you need, they can likely point you in the right direction, albeit for a price. However, if you approach them with rudeness, you're unlikely to get far. Jongleur Mystic Wood Elves often pursue careers as traders, bartenders, sages, or masseurs.

The name of Clan Jongleur’s Circle is Friendship.

Clan Daemonae: Clan Daemonae is perhaps best characterized as "dramatic." They frequently exude an abundance of attitude, although they don't take themselves too seriously and often engage in self-deprecating humor. Known for their swift and instinctive reactions, they rarely find themselves at a loss for a firm response or a witty retort. This natural talent for rapid responsiveness provides their allies with the benefit of time for thoughtful deliberation while often causing their adversaries to become disoriented and scattered. Individuals hailing from Clan Daemonae often pursue careers as bodyguards, diplomats, or mercenaries, leveraging their unique blend of charisma and quick thinking in these roles.

The name of Clan Daemonae’s Circle is Opportunity.

Clan Venteen: The Venteen clan stands as one of the oldest and most deeply rooted clans in the Mystic Wood, with their origins traceable through tales dating back to the earliest days of the Wood’s history. They exhibit a generally more serious and composed outlook on life compared to other clans, often assuming the roles of planners and organizers in various situations. Taking a few extra moments to ponder before leaping into action is a common trait among them. Venteen members are typically slow to anger and even slower to cool down, emphasizing their measured and contemplative nature. A cornerstone of the Venteen identity is their strong sense of family. Once you become a part of their family or earn their friendship, it's a lifelong commitment, regardless of whether you're a Mystic Wood Elf or not. They played a pivotal role in developing modern child-rearing techniques and education, reflecting their deep family-oriented values. While they may be hesitant to meddle in others' personal affairs, they readily extend assistance when asked.

One of the most significant accomplishments of the Venteen clan is their custodianship of the Library of the Mystic Wood, a substantial repository of knowledge compiled by Mystic Wood Elves from various clans, dedicated to the collective betterment of all. This library contains copies of numerous journals authored by different Mystic Wood Elves, contributing to its wealth of information. The Venteen clan's commitment to the library has profoundly shaped their overall outlook, favoring honesty and straightforwardness over any form of subterfuge. They prefer to speak the untarnished truth rather than attempt to explain a lie later on.

A distinct characteristic of a Venteen is their unwavering habit of carrying a diary to meticulously document events happening around them, a testament to their natural inclination toward cataloging. Once a diary or journal is filled, they make every effort to return it to the library, recognizing its value in expanding the collective body of knowledge. This diary is treasured above all else and holds a place of profound significance in their lives.

The Venteen clan's distinctive tattoo consists of a series of parallel lines, which may take various forms and designs as long as the ends remain open.

The name of Clan Venteen’s Circle is Reason.

Clan Entenari: Scant information is available regarding this small and enigmatic clan, but its most celebrated member is believed to have undergone a recent change in race, from what was previously known. He was regarded as “tame” in comparison to some of the more violent and aggressive members within the clan. Typically, this clan tends to draw individuals who are considered the most socially maladapted by the standards of the Mystic Wood Elves.

The name of Clan Entenari’s Circle is Vengeance.

Clan Speakers

Speakers play a pivotal role in overseeing the moral development of individuals and the community at large. Within the Mystic Wood Elf society, the Speaker is the equivalent of a tribe’s shaman. They bear the responsibility of safeguarding clan and race history through a complex system of oral traditions and storytelling. To aid them in preserving these crucial oral traditions, Speakers possess the magical ability to communicate with those who have permanently departed from the mortal realm. This extraordinary ability enables them to retrieve knowledge that might otherwise have been lost due to permanent death, ensuring the preservation of vital information even during times of significant upheaval. However, as information gleaned from the other-world may often necessitate interpretation, Speakers have emerged as a robust moral guiding force within the social fabric of the Mystic Wood Elf society.

While the ability to be a Speaker was originally an innate trait, years of diligent study have led to the development and dissemination of the proper techniques required to activate this power.

Clan Elders

In every Clan, there exists a Council of Elders tasked with resolving internal disputes and supervising the well-being of the clan as a whole, serving as the wise heads or "parents" of the extended "family." These councils typically comprise six members, who are often more advanced in years than most, although the consideration of ability holds significant weight. It is not entirely uncommon for a relatively young clan member to also assume a position on the council based on their merits.

Myths of Creation

Mystic Wood Elves have woven a tapestry of myths within their cultural traditions, each offering them a unique explanation for the origins of their race.

In one such myth, they recount their ancestry as a fusion between a nomadic tribe of Wood Elves and Wild Elves who traversed the region, engaging in close relationships with Nymphs, Satyrs, Dryads, and various local land-bound sprites. This lineage, they argue, is responsible for their profound connection to the forest, which they regard as their racial homeland. They also attribute their occasional irresistible wanderlust to this heritage. What sets them apart is their remarkable strength and resilience, traits that surpass the capabilities of strictly Elven society. Additionally, they bear two small protruding horns on their foreheads, a distinctive feature that clearly distinguishes them from the typical varieties of elves.

Another myth tells of the Mystic Wood Elves being placed on Tyrra by a greater force, acting as a bulwark against the encroachment of cosmic malevolence. Despite their shared belief in this myth, there is no consensus among them regarding the precise nature or sources of these benevolent and malevolent powers.

Supporters of this myth point to the existence of an almost innate ethical code and a latent capacity for a ferocious battle frenzy, suggesting that Mystic Wood Elves may have a warrior heritage buried deep in their distant past. However, it is unlikely that the true origins of the Mystic Wood Elves, whether within the Mystic Woods of the Northern Marches or elsewhere, will ever be definitively known.

Regarding the Mystic Wood itself, there are whispers of a time when the colossal trees that now stand at its fringes were once living Treants, employed for defense in times of dire need. The legend further suggests that these Treants remain dormant until summoned, yet the method for doing so has been lost to the annals of time.

A Careful Aversion: Evendarrian Mystic Wood Elves

A Welcomed Arrival

Mystic Wood Elves have integrated themselves into the various kingdoms of Evendarr for a considerable period. They are warmly embraced by the wider society, as their arrival consistently infuses an ambiance of mirth, affection, and access to exceptional products and services. Although they usually do not linger for extended periods, their regular arrivals are eagerly awaited with enthusiasm and anticipation by the local inhabitants.

Politics

Mystic Wood Elves are rarely pressed to become involved in the Kingdom or local politics unless there is an immediate danger to the Wood or its people.

While non-interference may be a hallmark of their general approach, for Mystic Wood Elves, there is a clear exception: slavery and its perpetuation. Regardless of political affiliations or allegiances, a Mystic Wood Elf invariably stands as an unwavering advocate for the liberty of all individuals. They uphold an uncompromising zero-tolerance stance against any form of enslavement, extending this protection to beings often overlooked or excluded from the safeguarding of the kingdoms they inhabit.

This principled commitment to opposing slavery occasionally places Mystic Wood Elves at odds with local authorities and governing bodies. Nonetheless, their stance presents a formidable argument, one that leaves little room for negotiation or compromise when it comes to the issue of slavery. In the face of such moral conviction, the legitimacy of enslavement becomes a challenging position for any governing entity to maintain. The Mystic Wood Elves' resolute dedication to universal freedom leaves an indelible mark on their reputation, emphasizing their unshakable commitment to justice and freedom.

The Mystic Inn

The Mystic Inn stands as a truly unique and unparalleled establishment, a charming little inn nestled approximately 50 miles outside of Endarr City, right along the roadside. Its origins trace back to the vision of a Mystic Wood Elf traveler named Hostel, who was a frequent visitor to Endarr City. Enlisting the aid of fellow travelers, Hostel and his companions worked together to bring the Mystic Inn into existence.

Serving as a crucial waypoint for travelers en route to Endarr City, the Mystic Inn offers several dozen comfortable beds, inviting fireplaces, and a well-appointed kitchen stocked with cookware and eating utensils. What sets this inn apart is its distinct approach to operation; rather than employing a traditional staff, the entire Mystic Inn relies on donations from the kind-hearted travelers who pass through its doors.

Remarkably, the Mystic Inn seldom falls prey to vandals, thanks to its consistent occupation by various adventurers. A mutual respect for those journeying along the road has helped maintain the inn's appearance and functionality, turning it into a cherished haven for all who seek shelter and companionship during their travels.

The Wanderlust Balladeers

The Wanderlust Balladeers, a wandering musical troupe comprised of Mystic Wood Elves, are a captivating and harmonious spectacle that journey through Evendarr. Guided by their charismatic leader, Crescendo, they weave enchanting melodies that resonate with the mysteries of the Mystic Wood itself. With their ethereal voices and instruments, they transport their audiences to distant lands and bygone eras, narrating tales of far-off adventures and timeless sagas.

As they traverse the roads and paths of their world, the Wanderlust Balladeers are not just entertainers but also storytellers, breathing life into the ancient lore of their people. Their music carries the essence of the woodlands they call home, infusing it with a sense of enchantment and wonder that lingers long after their songs have ended. Whether performing in the bustling marketplace of Endarr City, quaint village squares, or beneath the starlit canopy of the Mystic Wood, the Wanderlust Balladeers enchant all who are fortunate enough to hear their melodies, leaving behind a trail of enchanted hearts and timeless tales.

The Thrifty Gift

Tucked away in a small, inconspicuous market corner of Endarr City, The Thrifty Gift stands as a truly unique shop, operating under the whimsical guidance of Token, a wise Mystic Wood Elf. This charming establishment is unlike any other, for within its rustic walls, a different kind of currency flows.

At The Thrifty Gift, gold coins and silver pieces are obsolete, replaced by the art of trade, barter, and favors. Token believes in the intrinsic value of social connection, and the shop thrives on the exchanges of goods, services, and the occasional favor, rather than conventional currency. The shelves are lined with treasures of times past, and each item has a story to share, from vintage garments that once graced the halls of nobility to long- forgotten keepsakes holding cherished memories.

Visitors to Token's quaint shop quickly discover the allure of this unique marketplace. As they peruse the wares, they find themselves engaging in lively exchanges, striking deals with fellow patrons, and weaving a web of camaraderie. It's a place where the currency is kindness, and every trade is a bond forged between kindred spirits.

In The Thrifty Gift, the true riches lie not in material wealth but in the experiences, connections, and stories exchanged within its hallowed walls. It's a place where the mysticism of the past meets the enchantment of the present, and where the currency of the heart is the most treasured of all.
